Vanilla videos for elite mob damage comparisons

Making this thread more or less in response to the video by Baron I think what he’s doing is great, it’s nice to see people passionate enough about the game that they are going out of their way to see things are correct. However I think his conclusion, that damage numbers are incorrect, is wrong based off of vanilla era videos that I’ve seen and have listed below.

Better to watch most of these muted.

Wailing Caverns Tank PoV

Shadowfang Keep Tank PoV

Counter attack (Quest in the Barrens) Warrior PoV

Level 35 Warlock vs 38 Sea Giant in Desolace, warlock takes 260 and 237 damage at 1:55

Level 10 mage vs Vagash - 11 elite. Takes 25 damage from melee and 31 from frost AoE

Stitches vs Sentinel Hill Smacks our hunter for 220 at 6:58, we also see him chunking various players in the video

Overlord Ramtusk fight Healer PoV

Level 33-35 group vs Herod with voice chat Rogue PoV, very poor quality can’t quite make out damage

Mid upper 30s group vs Herod, great quality. Feral Druid PoV, 280-300 damage from Cleave - 356 damage from normal Blades of Light and 425 from enraged Blades of Light

Level 60 Warrior vs Herod because I couldn’t find any level appropriate PoV for auto attacks and etc.

Level 22 Paladin on his quest to get Verigan’s Fist Takes damage from Elites outside BFD, Goblins in Deadmines and mobs in SFK.

Mekgineer Thermaplug Level 41 Paladin PoV, at one point he targets the level 34 warrior who has Aggro and the warrior takes 87 damage (250 health to 167), pretty similar values to the paladin. Also the bombs explode at 0:54

Razorfen Downs level 42 Paladin PoV. Don’t worry, about 2 minutes in he turns on his UI

I guess I’ll edit this from time to time if I find more or people post more in the comments. From what I’ve seen, everything looks to be correct.

Some are pitting their memory of fifteen years ago against the hard data that Blizz has. I find this laughable.

From what I can tell the damage numbers are accurate in the beta.

People just got way better and 1.12 apparently was easier than earlier patches.

People didn’t get much better, 1.12 was seriously nerfed compared to most of vanilla.

You really don’t think that in 10+ years the average skill of players hasn’t increased noticeably?

There are lots of factors to change things from early to late in Vanilla. The biggest is class overhauls, but players skill/knowledge will be another big factor.

People today know what talents to pick, what abilities to use and what gear they should be going after.

Even during 1.12 there were lots of players that didn’t have a clue.

Also Id love to see more players make comparison videos. Most of us aren’t trying to tear down the work, we are just pointing out inconsistencies that may be throwing things off.

No, I don’t. The game has changed too much over the years to be directly relevant anymore and, honestly, there’s a pretty low skill cap on the game anyways. People learned a lot in the first few years and then reached the peak. Then the game changed and the skill level dropped or changed to different skills.

Modern WoW doesn’t have much in common with vanilla wow other than some similar quests and names. Nearly every aspect of the game has completely changed, 10+ years of experience with a different game has very little relevance on the original game.

Even the changes from release to 1.12 were pretty large. Anyone who started at 1.12 had a much easier time than they would have at release.

Well I got way better. I can’t speak for everyone else though.

Me in TBC:

  1. Didn’t key bind.
  2. Didn’t have a DPS meter. Didn’t have an optimized rotation or an optimized build really.
  3. Didn’t understand threat, or half of what healers and tanks were dealing with.
  4. Didn’t raid. (heh)
  5. Hit level cap.

Me in WOTLK:

  1. Still didn’t really kebind. Sort of.
  2. Learned what a DPS meter did.
  3. Raided through easy mode nax and part of the next tier.
  4. Got a more optimized build. Manged to impress my raid leader with some good dps.
  5. Of course hit level cap.

Me in Legion.

  1. Keybinded.
  2. Used many mods.
  3. Became one of the better rets for a period of time on my server.
  4. Raided a lot relative to earlier expansions.
  5. Spammed dungeons like crazy.
  6. Learned to parse.

Me in Classic:

All of my experience brought back into an old game everyone understands already.

That’s just me though.

Some individuals may have gotten better. However, many of us were doing these same sort of things back in vanilla. There’s nothing new with any of that.

I can’t understand why people think his video is evidence of anything. He starts by comparing an even level mob damage to the damage of a mob that is green and well below his own level as if they are comparable things. Later on in the video he starts comparing a trash mobs damage to a boss. The whole thing is comparing apples to oranges. It’s not science, it’s propaganda.

I believe people sympathize with his opinion more so than anything else. I mean, some of these elites do deal relatively low damage, but it isn’t lower than it was in 1.12 or even 1.11.
