Wait... Is Blizzard starting Vanilla servers again? Or is this just for private servers?
Been gone a while and heard a rumor.

Yes. Vanilla but it is going to be called Classic.
Basically it is Vanilla with some light updates like minor graphics, bnet integration etc but the game play is going to be the same. Same with models and spell graphics will be remaining vanilla style.
Long story short:
Blizzard spammed "you think you do but you don't"
A private server had like over 700k accounts w/ 150k of them remaining active got shut down.
GD forums FLOODED with current and old players, literally people re-subbed just to flood the GD forums with anger.
Blizzard gave in.

They are the same minus Classic will have VERY subtle differences. The leaked photos show it having for example the WoW emblem the same but it will say "CLASSIC" under it for example.
Yes there will be subtle differences but for the most part they are recreating vanilla as much as possible.

Note: That demo is only for those who have a blizzcon pass. And you will be able to play it at home but you will have time limitations.

We don't really know all that much just yet...
Just that it's going to be BASED off 1.12 with some thus far minor datamined changes (^see above post) that where discovered in the demo client you get access to for watching Blizzcon.
The good news is, that we should (hopefully) know a ton more about what's happening by the end of Blizzcon this weekend.
Also, as you appear to be a paladin, I look forward to seeing you in Classic, and them promptly murdering you and taking your soul for my collection.

Let me give you a small bit of info that will help you on these Classic forums though.
1: These forums are generally dominated by a group called "no changes" I am part of said group. Most of us minus radical purists understand that Blizzard is putting Classic onto current servers thus it will come with tiny alterations such as mentioned. But any form of requesting changes such as "balance my class" or "I want tmog" will be flamed to hell or called a troll nonstop.
2: This forum community does not get along with GD forum community. Like at all. Why? GD forum community heavily support the current game in the way it has been altered. We do not. And while we support Vanilla for everything it was they do not. They are also known for coming here to troll make threads like "I want pandas in classic" for example. And no, you will not be flamed for playing current wow.
3: In all seriousness. Just have a good time here. Don't mind the radicals and the trolls too much.

I would add that the "called a troll" part is, in my observation, mainly because there are pretty much constant troll threads posting stuff like that.
Occasionally someone who genuinely means well gets flamed, and that's unfortunate. For my part, I'm pretty...blunt with my opinion of retail (I never got above level 85, and I regret staying with Cataclysm for that long), but I have nothing against any player who has fun playing retail. Incomprehension yes. Malice no.

Just a little bit more. Said server ended up gathering 200k + signatures for a petition. All sorts of different gaming genres of streamers got involved and signed it. Mark Kern who was a former blizzard Dev, hand delivered the 200k plus pages directly to blizzard.
A little bit more into the future Blizzard had a sit down meeting with said private server Devs. 2 yearsish later here we are.
