I wonder if all this vanilla > retail rubbish people push on others in conversations, is gonna hurt what many of you hope for. A popular and thriving game!
Also makes you wonder. Most of the people playing back then were running around like mindless goons, due to the fact that there wasnt any streamers, fanbase DB sites etc. So information was rather limited.
Not to mention that if you played back then, you would be an adult now, and if you still behave like barrens chat back then… well i aint sure the game will be very fun or welcoming to new players or returning for that matter.
Anyway, just some random rambling from a old 43y dude, that hope that the community will be the binding factor on the classic realms.
There is certainly ignorance and bigotry on both sides, the action folks try to change our game, we trash their game for low effort to reward ratio, etc.
But a few straddle the line between, aware that either side is a viable choice.
No where near enough to give any semblance of hope, of course.
You’re always going to have elitism when you put people together. You have varying mindsets, and gaming in general derived from a simple match up that evolved into what is known as the “high score” dynamic. Not only were you playing friends or others, but you played against yourself. Games were meant for enjoyment, but as the old saying “competition breeds success” goes, the high score dynamic compounded what the goals were. People played games and looked for tricks, easement, and mastery. A lot of the fun factor in gaming derived from the difficulty in which a person first experiences and masters gamesmanship.
Now, you take Vanilla, where millions grew up playing to win, and master, and you throw them together in a world. It was only natural course for some to feel their worth better than others and voice that. It’s gotten worse, even cumbersome in that regard.
Do I think it will take away from enjoyment? Not me personally. I don’t care if someone is vulgar, foolish, elite, or whatever. I do not judge anyone and never have. I may take note or raise an eyebrow to some questionable behavior based on my own moral compass and my own experience, but I won’t demean someone.
I don’t feel this thread is worthy of a response, because the bait seems fairly obvious. But to approach the fence, I am doing so.
Point blank; the fun is as good as you make it. If you foster negativity and surround yourself with an ideal that the elitism is the prevailing factor in why some are on board with the entire project, I think you are doing nothing besides looking at the sun with a magnifying lens. There are countless others looking to recapture the mysticism and nostalgia of a day’s gone by experience.
There’s no point in being grown up if I can’t act childish every now and then.
Also, we had elitism back in Vanilla and got on just fine with those sorts of people. I don’t really see the whole “Vanilla > Retail” people being a huge issue unless you’re personally offended by somebody holding that opinion or you go around talking about how much better BfA is while playing on Classic servers.
Once you get in-game, people will be talking about the dungeon you’re about to run, not what version of WoW they like the most.
What makes you think some of us weren’t adults back then? (I was 37, and will be 50 by the time WOW Classic releases.)
Just as there were in 2004-2006, just as there are now, there will be members of the community who are elitist jerks of the worst sort AND there will be members of the community who are cheerful and welcoming. Which people we find in game will be as much a reflection on the type of person we are.
Those who obsess about only playing with the best and sneering at the rest, are likely to surround themselves with others like them.
Those who love to interact and enjoy the company of other players are likely to surround themselves with others like them.
I like your comment, and i can relate to some of it, others not so much. As it should be!
But i do have something to add, i aint sure what you mean by:
“I don’t feel this thread is worthy of a response, because the bait seems fairly obvious. But to approach the fence, I am doing so.”
Am i baited? and for what? I constantly hear in game “stop crying” or similar when somebody s expressing their dislike, opinion or otherwise aint just going with the flow. I dont get it? if people interacted like this in the “real world”, most people would find them annoying and try to avoid social interactions. Sure you can banter with your friend etc. but to strangers that aint like minded?
Where did i imply that “some of you” weren’t adults back then? i was referring to the fact, that most would be adults now! why i find the behaviour odd.
But i agree, there will always be bad apples… but to many in the basket, and the whole batch is ruined. Which is what i am afraid of. Seeing that the company, is letting retail fail. It would be nice if classic relaunch, would be a success, if only for the community.
The gaming scene can be super intolerant.
I deal with this by not participating in content that I know is too much for me, and if I get in a position where I’m just not doing the job, owning up to my mistakes and not complaining, and leaving gracefully.
Yes, I’m a casual. I don’t know if you are.
