Valor Points / Harbinger Crest comparison

What was wrong with the valor points system from Wrath? How is the Harbinger Crest system better? From the perspective of someone returning to the game, it seems much more convoluted, but attempting to achieve the same result. Do activities > get a currency > exchange currency for gear.

Same thing, different color and a little extra terd polish.

Except with crests you do content more equal to the reward.

With valor you have everyone spamming 2s for BIS gear.

Two main reasons

1: if you upgrade an item you upgrade the slot too, so if you get a different item at a lower ilvl you can upgrade it to the same as your old one.

2: having 4 currencies means you can spend the lower ones on gear you have whilst saving the higher ones for gear you will get later.

The end result of both of these things is that it will almost always be correct to just spend whatever you have upgrading whatever you’ve got. It means you can get stronger week on week without feeling like you’re sacrificing anything long term, and it means getting stronger isn’t reliant on getting XYZ piece of gear worth upgrading. It’s all worth upgrading.

I could do heroics for ICC 25 rewards in wrath

I can’t do heroics for heroic raid rewards now

There were not fans of people speed running the lowest possible mythic+ keys to improve their gear. This way you need to do content on par with the gear you are trying to upgrade.

Valor points encourages players to run the easiest content to farm currency. The crest system reduces this effect by stratifying players.

When you have very geared players queueing for +2s it means that players that should be doing that content can’t find a group because why take an ilvl 600 player when you could have an ilvl 632 player?
