Using Traps When Moving with Mouse?

I use my mouse to move and while moving, if I push my keybind for my trap, it stops my movement and doesn’t bring up the aiming reticle until after I release my mouse buttons.

Right now when I need to throw a trap, I’m jumping and using the time that I have in the air to try to aim the reticle and land CC or knockback. It’s not ideal, and feels a little clunky, but I didn’t know if there was a better way to use and aim traps without having to give up my preferred method of movement.

Thanks for any help! :slight_smile:

There is a macro to throw trap at mouse pointer, I forget what it is even though I use it lol, Im not logged in to check. Also you may want to try a new way of moving, I use an Azeron gamepad, you move with a thumbstick. They have similar cheaper types that also use a thumbstick. Just an idea.

Oh wow, just searched that up and the hand-like controller looks complicated, though I’m sure it’s more intuitive than it looks.

I’ve tried WASD movement, but it just feels so bad to me and it makes it really hard to hit my keybinds comfortably. It usually isn’t all that big of a deal; really just on my hunter when I need to land a good steel/freezing trap before someone jumps on me or they get a heal off.

Ya WASD is for newbs…lol im joking I think thats how the majority of these savages play, I absolutely cant play like that, a keyboard is for chat, thats it. The Azeron is very simple to use and moving with a thumbstick while having access to all your buttons and still total mouse freedom is a no brainer to me but Im pretty serious about my performance, maybe most people just dont care I dont know. Before the Azeron I used a logitech gamepad, it also uses a thumbstick for movement while having all your hotkeys right under your hand.

It’s “@cursor”, so /cast [@cursor] Trap. This is practically mandatory for PvP lol.

There is nothing wrong with WASD.

The issue is the default keybinds with A and D for turn rather than strafe, your main actionbar stretched all the way from 1 through =, and random menu functions in prime keybind locations.

Try this instead if you don’t want to buy a separate peripheral:

Red = Abilities
Orange = Movement (A and D are strafe left/right, rest are default)
Teal = Targeting (assist macro bound to H)
Purple = Opie Ring (uses quest items and ExtraActionButton)
White = Modifiers (all abilities are multi-ability macros, using modifiers to pick between them)
Gray = Menu functions

I also have a few functions (mouseover macros and reticle target abilities) bound to extra buttons on my mouse.

Theres absolutely everything wrong with wasd lol, imagine pressing buttons to move with the same fingers needed to press abilities, all on the same hand, its insanity. :smiley:

Look I get this is the standard way most people know how to play, but I’m assuring you, there is a MUCH better and easier way that will improve your overall performance by a wide margin.

Yeah, I’m good. I’ve been playing since 2005, I’ve tried every control method imaginable including mouse movement, WASD movement, gamepads, purpose built devices like the Nostromo or Orbweaver, etc. The keybind I posted above is what I’ve found works best for me, given literally thousands of hours of testing.

If something else works better for you, that’s great for you, but there’s no need to trash other’s preferred inputs that work well simply because you don’t personally enjoy playing that way.

Sorry to necro but I wanted to know if anyone ever found a solid way to aim the reticle while using mouse buttons to move?

I’ve tried to get used to using keys to move but it seriously hinders my enjoyment of the game because it feels terribly unnatural. Instead, I hold RMB/LMB and use the side buttons to strafe and it’s the only easy way for me to navigate the game, but I’m running into the same issue where it just locks me in place and doesn’t bring up my spell.

When i personally use traps i for one uses the macro that puts the trap on mousepointer instead of aiming with the reticule. Helps a lot since its faster and less clicks.

Regarding movements i dont really understand. Are you guys point and clicking where to go or do you mean you use both LMB+RMB to run and move camera/direction at the same time? Because the last one is how i move but during that half second where i aim and use my trap I just stand still, am in the middle of a jump or most often use the move key (W for me) during that second that i use the mouse for aiming the trap and then moves back to using the mouse for movements only.
Been playing with traps for 17 years though so its all muscle memory but that is the best way IMO.

I honestly use an @cursor macro and put my traps on mousewheel up/down and modifiers. Pretty much anything ground targeted, I try to keep on mousewheel with a macro.

You can have a macro to throw a trap at your feet, but using mouse to move severely gimps you in any pvp situation if you need to trap. Just get used to wasd

So I use LMB+RMB for movement. There are two buttons on the side of my mouse as well; I use one for strafe left and the other for strafe right. This way I can still move the camera while being able to move any which way I need, but I also have all of my keys available.

It probably comes down to what you are used to and preference. But I have always liked to mainly use LMB+RMB and strafe with A+D. It opens it up to much smoother play IMO since I can do things just like this. I can still keep my character moving while using my mouse for something specific for that second.
