I’m surprised that this is so hard to find using search engines. By default it’s turned off, but if you want to get a quick idea of what caused you or your teammate’s death, here is where to turn it on with Details:
- Find any Details window
- Hover over the cogwheel icon (top right)
- Click “Options Panel”
- In the left-most column, click “Options”
- In the 2nd column to the left, click “Raid Tools”
- Find the section named “Announce Death”
- Check “Enabled”
- You can reduce the “Only First” to a small number like 2 to make it less annoying
I hope this helps especially those who play a lot of M+ dungeons!

You can already see what caused a player death, no need to put in a chat bubble and distract people with useless information.
Largely agree, but just turn off chat bubbles.
Any competent player can see how the death was caused. This doesn’t stop endless dps from blaming healers for there death that was caused by themselves and easily avoided, Not only should it say how they died but put a little (avoidable damage) note next to those instances as well.
No. Chat bubbles are the only reasonable way to see who has a mechanic with lack of visuals. Remember Prideful? It would’ve been impossible to see without chat bubbles.
Sadly chat bubbles are the only way you can track friendly players when mechanics lack a proper visual component (and that’s sadly the norm).
Recount can report it as a “Death” tab also. with or without healing received.
