Upgrading items and losing previous appearance?

Hello??? I was just told by a game master that it is intended for you to lose the heroic version of an appearance if you upgrade it to 441 and gain the mythic appearance before the trade timer runs out. This guy has to be wrong, right? Theres no way this is legit. You get punished for upgrading gear if you are a mog collector?

I have the Recycled Golemskin Waistguard from heroic, and upgraded it to 441 20 or so minutes after getting it which then took away my heroic appearance despite getting the heroic item. GM told me this was intended…no way right?

You get both

That doesn’t sound right. I’m guessing the logic is to wait until the item isn’t tradeable, then upgrade? Stupid, if that’s the case.

If the timer is on it and you didn’t use it for transmog, then no, you don’t have the appearance.

You lose it if you change out the item before the refund window is up. We had this recently with the 3 tokens during fated season and people buying the base item and using the heroic/mythic upgrade before it was equipped/timer expired.

Tl;dr the upgrade process likely works off the ancient refunding code (which has since has things like transmog tacked on to it).

PS equip the item before upgrading.

It was a piece with a timer on it. So it doesn’t get added to transmog until it’s equipped or used for transmog.

If he didn’t equip it or transmog it to see the “you have learned this appearance,” You don’t get the appearance.

Ahh understood. Sorry I must have missed that

All good! I had to read it over a few times, because I was like, “… hold on…” LOL

That GM would be wrong.

No, the GM is correct. I would suggest reading the explanations above.

Thats absolutely insane lmao. That was the last heroic piece i needed to complete the set as well and i upgraded it before putting it on because i had another 441 belt on already, was going to be swapping them out as the recycled golemskin belt had a socket and my current has leech.

So, because i didnt learn the appearance right away and instead went to upgrade it, I lost the base heroic appearance despite having the literal heroic belt (just upgraded) in my bags. LMAO

They need warnings of this in game, GM told me a warning gets displayed, but it absolutely did not when upgrading.

I think maybe this has never happened to me because I favorite the items before upgrading them. That’s still something that shouldn’t happen.

I’m just used to equipping or transmogging first, then checking my collections, because I don’t trust this game. LOL

Yeah clearly not trusting the game would make sense lol. I didn’t realize it worked this way. I upgraded everything else just fine but i guess that was after the timer expired. They couldn’t refund me the heroic appearance either despite having the heroic belt in my bags (i was nice to the gm in case anyone is worried or gets the wrong idea, they’re cool and had nothing to do with this)

They should legit be displaying warnings in game though. Why would you wait to upgrade if you have mythic raid right after you do your quick heroic? It certainly didn’t tell me to wait or i’d lose the appearance

I guess they think the timer is a warning. Since we’ve never learned an appearance while it has a timer. But it should be more clear.

The in game tooltip for what appearances you’ve learned and not learned is bad and doesn’t work half the time. It’s honestly the reason I have the Better Wardrobe and Transmog addon.

I’m sorry that happened. :slightly_frowning_face:

All good I’ll get the appearance again, just very confused it works this way with the new upgrade system. I understood that before, you would need to learn the item for sure. But now that we can upgrade so much so often I figured it’d just give you both despite the timer.

Yeah I get that. They do need to be more clear about it. I hope you get it again soon!

LOL! that GM should be fired 100% System designer too… So dumb.

Don’t feel bad. I have the Reclaimed Thunderstrike appearance, but not the Reclaimed Shadowstrike appearance. I tried to argue with Blizz that you can’t get Thunderstrike without first attaining Shadowstrike and converting it, but they refused to budge.

That’s like when I had the full set of Soulforge in my bank when they added in saved appearances, but I didn’t get any Lightforged armor credit. There was no way to get Soulforge pieces without getting the Lightforged pieces yet.
