Upgrading Heirlooms

Hi all. I’m coming back to WoW after a 4 year break.

  1. I totally forgot that heirloom gear can be upgraded. I want to do this for my druid on Illidan. Can I upgrade the heirloom gear from my main warlock (he’s on Dalaran - alliance), and will this take affect account wide?

  2. I assume the heirloom vendor in Ironforge is the one I talk to for the upgrades. Are these upgrades capable of maxing out the 4/4?

Thanks for the help in advanced y’all.

Yes you can. Heirlooms are account wide.

You can also upgrade them with TW tokens

I would also add that if gold becomes a consideration, there is no point upgrading weapons past level 100 (as you will get an uber weapon after that range and weapons do not give bonus exp). Likewise there is no point upgrading amulets beyond level 110.

And if gold is even tighter, there isn’t much point upgrading the other non-exp-bonus slots (necks and trinkets) past 100 either since the game throws plenty of acceptable items at you in the Legion range and they don’t add much to your power anyway.

And post 110 you will have easy access to (far better than heirlooms) Azerite gear in the Helm, Shoulder and Chest slots so you can skimp on those too.

I only upgraded Legs, Cloak and Rings all the way to 120.

Thanks! I appreciate the quick reply and thorough detail. Too kind. Thanks so much.

When the Darkmoon Faire is open, the vendor there sells the first level of upgrade tokens for DM Faire prize tickets.

That’s not going to be helpful to you for a couple of weeks, however!

I would fully upgrade the weapon to 120 because 110-120 you won’t have to worry about a weapon drop. I upgraded everything. Come Shadowlands we won’t have to worry about BFA’s azerite gear.

Fair, I guess if you don’t level by questing you have to worry about where weapon upgrades come from. If you do level by questing you get a new weapon about every third quest chain, it’s crazy.

This one drives me crazy. The azerite gear has the traits but at a price of 30% extra xp. I didn’t equip a piece of azerite gear until 120. Held on to that 30%.

My alts I mainly levels through assaults, bonus objectives, and the war campaign. Oh and sprinkle in some holiday xp there too lol!!

You’d technically be weaker and easier to kill without Azerite. Thus, some charts saying it’d be better to use Azerite gear.

My preference is to wear Azerite while killing, heirlooms for quest turn ins.

We’re in WOTLK timewalking though, so if you got characters not 120 yet, just spam TW dungeons and get those sweet levels.

I wonder what the value of heirlooms and heirloom upgrades will be once Shadowlands is released. Leveling will already be sped up by 70%.

Oh you definitely are weaker but hey, there’s the sense of danger some say is lacking lol!!
