Hi Everyone:
Currently have a desktop with the following specs.
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 version x.x
CPU: Intel i7-4790K @ 4.00 GHz, 4001 Mhz, 4 Core
GPU: Nvidia GTX 970.
RAM: 8GB, I believe it is DDR3
So I know my CPU is pretty much the top of what that motherboard will support so upgrading the CPU will involve upgrading the motherboard as well. I would assume the same holds true for the GPU.
I have a 1TB HDD and 250GB SDD so at this point I would want to upgrade all of them as well.
I think personally I’m just at a point where buying a new PC is the right answer, as looking at the systems in the $1500 to $2000 range I can pretty close to the top end for a lot of these components. I just wanted some opinions to see if I’m on the right track.
How do you feel about building one? You can build for a bit cheaper but then you will know exactly what’s in it

I would hold off on any purchases and/or upgrades unless it’s something you can carry over to the new build. Currently due to poor supplies, high demand, and new products being released in the next few weeks; the entire price performance structure for PC hardware is topsy-turvy.
I would get a new SSD as those prices are pretty good and Prime Day is coming up. You can install WoW on it and move it over to new build.
On the GPU side I would not get anything past the GTX1660 super unless it’s heavily discounted. You can try to wait it out for a RTX 3070 (or AMD equivalent) for your current build (it would fit your overall budget @ leaked MSRP prices) and then carry that over to a new build.
Then around xmas time with the new AMD CPU launched and prices stabilized (or shortly after) you can build/buy a new platform (CPU, mobo, RAM).

The 4790k is still a very nice CPU. It’s about 15% faster than my 4790.
I say; Buy new. Not much you can do for what you have, its already at or close to top of the line, for its day.
Sure, more Ram and trading out the GTX970 for a GTX1070 would be an improvement, and probably noticeable, but what you already have isn’t at all bad, so the affect* , will likely be short of ‘upgrade’.
So, buy new, and up to date. Buy new today, and in 2-3 months, that ‘new’ computer will be full of ‘last wave, last years’ hardware. So, let the new wave break, and buy new. best wishes.
Buy new. When I went from a 4790K to a 2600X it was a noticeable upgrade.
$1500 should get you a very nice top end rig.
