Updating goes to scanning issue

I was able to log in briefly (maybe 10 minutes), but my game eventually froze. The Launcher then said I needed to update WoW, so I clicked “Update.” However, after clicking Update, it immediately converts to “Scanning.” This takes about 10 minutes, after which it errors out and tells me to do it again.

I’ve now done this three times, with no success.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey there Trantor,

Thank you for reaching out, as it can understandably be frustrating to have a technical issue occur when simply trying to enjoy your time in the game. This sort of “scanning” behavior can have a few potential causes ranging from corrupted local files to a network-related problem. Try the following to narrow this down further:

  1. Try re-installing the Battle.net Desktop App.
  2. Fully update or temporarily uninstall security programs which may be interfering with your connection to the server(s). More information on troubleshooting security applications here, if curious.
  3. Test an alternate network such as a mobile hotspot to determine whether the problem is isolated to your current network.

If you’re still unable to start the update, please run a WinMTR network test so that we can further investigate the problem. Here are the instructions:

  1. Download the tool from this page
  2. In the “Host” field, enter “us.patch.battle.net” (without quotes).
  3. Start the test and launch the Battle.net Desktop App and attempt the update as normal. Ensure the issue occurs while the winMTR tool is running.
  4. After recording data for about 5 minutes, click “export text” and save the winMTR file in an easy to find location.
  5. Once you have that made, open the file. You’ll need to copy and paste the contents of the Text document into the post, and put four Tilde (~) marks above the winMTR. It’ll look like this:

I have the same problem. I tried to uninstall wow to fix a fps stuttering issue and then when i click to install i am stuck scanning.

I uninstalled and then reinstalled the Battle.net app and then tried again and am still stuck at scanning. I am frustrated at this point.

I am having this same issue.

My wife uses the same internet as I do with Wifi.

I actually WASN’T having this issue until I randomly decided to “scan and repair” when I got the new launcher download today. My wife has had the new launcher with no issues for several days.

In fact, my game has been fine except for an odd “you have been disconnected” error message that occasionally popped up when I would log out to switch characters in Wow. This message was in error because at no time was I disconnected - I’d click “ok” and move on to logging on my alt.

I am currently re-installing the launcher. Will update if this doesnt work.

I got the “Whoops! Looks like something broke. Give it another shot.” after waiting 20 minutes.

I will note that the download of the Battle.net App downloaded the old version and is also attempting to restart and install the new one.

This is horribly frustrating as I know Wow is running fine - its just the battle.net app keeping me from playing… is there a route around this?

So I have re-installed the battle.net launcher this is what the Winmrt came back with. Does this tell you anything, Skelegarer-1963?

fixed? but very weird.

Hey man, you didn’t by any chance change ISPs did you? Today I swapped from Cogeco to Bell, I have no bell userID yet and I assume they have some sort of built in security? Luckily I kept my cogeco connection lol, I swapped back to that and updated and now Im good to go. Even swapped BACK to bell after the update and am able to play.

I’m having the same issue and it always ends with oops something broke try again. It won’t even let me uninstall the battlenet app. I get an error saying the game is running and using the app

use the little drop down menu to bottom right to end the battle.net in the background.

I fixed it. But none of the blizzard things were able to help. Here is how I did it:

  • Save your WTF and Interface folders in a separate part of your computer (they are innately located in the regular wow folder).
  • re-open battle.net and look through the options and uninstall all blizzard games or atleast wow. Then uninstall the launcher.
  • Give it a restart and start fresh.
  • the folders you saved I assume can be added back into the regular folders they were in before with the re-install but they should hold your preferences in terms of addons and such.

Make sure to save your screenshots too separately if you have ones you like.

Took about two hours to reinstall and it seems totally fixed now.

Same issue. I’ve tried uninstalling launcher, then uninstalling game. Launcher seems to stop Windows from uninstalling game even after Launcher uninstalled. Now, instead of just one character falling through the world and d/c’ing me, I cannot log into any character. Stuck at Updating and Woops! message. I’m not even including all the troubleshooting I’ve tried, e.g. creating a new Windows Admin account. Clearly, this is a Blizzard/WoW problem. Not me. Not my connection. I’ve been at this for several hours today. Blizz-the launcher cannot scan/repair/update/uninstall/reinstall. I’m effectively locked out of WoW. Day 2 of problem (2/7/21). Still no fix from Blizz.

Day 5 for me. Problem started with the update last week.

Exact same problem.

When I uninstall something it takes me 2 days to reinstall bc all I have access to is sucky verizon broadband (which works perfectly well for 2 weeks out of each month until they slow the speed even though I’m on an unlimited plan).

I’ve been stuck in the “scanning files” loop for 5 days. Tried everything I’ve read, been told, and knew of already and nothing works.

With the number of people having the same problem, it has to be on Blizz’s end not ours.
