Over the course of the last couple expansions, we have seen many npc models get updated out in the world. Things like undead, demons, and wolves are the first that come to mind.
I say that blizzard should go back and update some of the older mount textures next. Things like class mounts and racial mounts should be first on the list. I can’t tell you how bad some of them look compared to newer models for some of these animals. The troll raptors, human horses, nelf nightsabers, and orc wolves stand out the most when you look at the more modern models for these types of mobs.

Yeah, I like this idea… TBH a nice thing that they could do is hand pick a few loved vanilla items and mounts and update them.
The old armor sets could be for example, Trial of Style rewards.

Ashes of Al’ar could really use an update, those low rez textures look like melted crayons.

I would really like the WoLK bears to get updated. We don’t have very many Bear mounts to begin with and only a couple have the new models. I would be ok with leaving the WoLK alone if we can get some new Bear mounts though.

Strongly disagree with mount textures.
I love how they’re relics of their time.
You see some rare low textured mount fly by and you know that dudes had that thing for a long damn time and he is an “OG”.
Most of the old mounts have equivalent modern models anyway.

I’m at a point where I basically can’t stand looking at anything that’s been made prior to WoD, and maaaaaaaybe Cataclysm in some specific cases, but I personally wouldn’t want them to spend resources that could be put to new content, on old content, no matter how much it pains me to move away from my hard earned T3 mogs and old raid mounts.

That’s pretty bad. Time to hunt for new mogs, I guess.
Agreed especially in that picture. She looks much better before and it’s not just the boobs it’s that lovely face. (That’s an awsome mog btw)
Nothing fits as good as that one did for her.
Unfortunately, Blizzard will run into players who (rightly or wrongly) claim the old models were better.
This leaves Blizzard with the neutral option of doing nothing or the backlash option of putting in developer time. It’s easy to see which solution they will choose.
I have a sneaking suspicion that SL is the precursor to updating everything released prior to Cataclysm.
Maybe…
I do like the reworking of zones like Arathi and Darkshore although I have a personal attachment to Auberdine so I was a little disappointed we didn’t get a pre-cata version of it.
Agreed, but for mobs they have shown to do mixed patterns which really confuse me.
Bears got replaced, but one of each remained for hunters.
Spiders, Hounds, Vultures and Beatles got replaced, no old models remain.
Ect ect.
They made new night elf saber mounts that drop from Darkshore elites. Honestly, I’m kind of glad they didn’t update the old ones into those because there’s just something off about them.
But the Gilnean racial mounts DID get replaced with new horses.
I’d love to see my OG nelf cat updated. I spent a lot of time grinding runecloth to get my Darnassus up to exalted for it, but I rarely pull it out because it looks so bad by modern standards. To make it worse, the shading on the metal parts of the nelf cats was messed up and darkened some time around Cataclysm, and it never got fixed (see below).
Swift Mistsaber (Vanilla)
Swift Mistsaber (BfA)
For the original racial mounts, they could just add new models as additional options on mount vendors. I’m still a little bitter that I never got a chance to get the original unarmored epic mounts and don’t want to see that repeated.

The thing with old models though is that we now have WoW classic, and it will likely expand into the more popular expansions like BC and Wrath. The old models are still in the game. It’s not like they are gone.
There could always be a toggle in the settings that enables or disables new textures, kind of like Halo Anniversary had where you could swap to the OG models from the first game or to the more recent models from Reach.
But my opinion on the subject remains unchanged. I think stuff should always be updated when it’s been a while. I don’t have nostalgia about anything, so I view old stuff as old stuff, not “the good times”. It just looks like the Cata revamp of the world, frozen in time and in desperate need of an update.
