*Updated* Dracthyr Self-Mounted "Flight", Confirmed

Damn it turns out it literally is everything I was hoping it was going to be in my original post, I did an indepth look into it all.

Dracthyr will have a kind of race-specific ability that enables full use of their wings in flight and will have the exact same behavioural mechanics as dragonriding will. Essentially a hybrid of the self-mount/druid flight form and the new dragonriding mechanics.

Absolutely perfect.

UPDATE: I want to clarify that this ‘flying’ will not be the same as with flying mounts. You cannot stay in place in the air and stay up there as long as you can effortlessly as is usual with all WoW flying mounts.

Dracthyr flying will require active attention and live motion in fighting against gravity, making dives and swooping back up to gain altitude and keep yourself aloft for as long as possible before you land. This is exactly the physics and mechanics of dragonriding of which the developers have said the Dracthyr will be capable of flying with their wings just like this.

It has been stated to be like “improved gliding” or “Demon Hunter Glide Plus”. The physics is very different with this mechanic of flight, fighting against gravity to stay in the air for as long as you can.

" Dragonriding isn’t flying though," “You can’t mount up, take off, and hover in the air for an unlimited amount of time like traditional flying,” “Dracthyr have wings so they get to fly and they use the same style of momentum and gravity that dragonriding drakes do.” [From the same sourced interview written above]

So perhaps I shouldn’t call it flying but “advanced gliding”. Ion stated that the Dracthyr will not be able to fly outside of the Dragon Isles like a regular mount with their wings, or anywhere for that matter as they will be adhering to the Dragonriding mechanics instead with their personal flight that has been frequently called as an enhanced version of Demon Hunter gliding.

I just didn’t want to give anybody the wrong impression that Dracthyr flying will be like regular flying mounts in WoW. Even though I stated clearly it was going to be using the Dragonriding mechanics above, this is still being misinterpreted, so I wanted to clarify once more but more thoroughly.

I heard they’ll probably turn out to be their own Dragonflight which will look really cool! I dont think they wanted a dragon riding a dragon and used the same mindset as with Pandaren Druids lol.

Huh, they just have to auto shift to humanoid form when mounting anything

No its only perfect if we can ride them like on druids

this would be cool. I can’t wait to get my hands on this.

Hopefully they can play all three class types. There is going to be nothing but Drakthry running around once the expansion releases.

Why do we keep talking about Drakthyr like they are actually a race option? It doesn’t matter what thier racials are because you can’t actually choose to play them.

We should just start calling them Evoker since they are inseparable

If Drak’thyr can use their wings in the same way the dragon mounts can, then I wonder if this new flying system is something that will continue into future expansions.

Demon Hunter wings are like balrog wings. They only exist if they look cool in the moment or for some kind of dramatic punctuation. They don’t work for functional, practical usage.

what is that source?

I added it for you

But he’s quoting:

“Dracthyr have wings so they get to fly and they use the same style of momentum and gravity that dragonriding drakes do. During their starter experience, you get introduced to the new mechanics with tutorials and all that stuff. Heading into building the expansion, knowing that we wanted to create this feature, we had to set up the environment to match. I’ve only gotten to see it myself recently and it shocked me how much it brought me into the world. Being engaged in the act of moving around while flying is very different for WoW, and made me see the environment in a new way.”

My understanding is that dracthyr will still be able to participate in the Dragonriding stuff too (I forget where I saw or heard it, it might’ve been during the deep dive?)

I see this as the model forward to get rid of path finding as they could probably unrestrict hovering and staying aloft to mastering the dragon riding towards the end of the expack:

“[Dragonriding] is very fast and fluid, it’s arcadey,” Jeremy explains. “You press the spacebar and you do a giant takeoff. And then the whole mini-game is that you’ve got height and speed and you have to try to figure out how to get as far as possible before you land again. And it should feel like you’re swooping and diving through these landscapes. With giant zones the two ended up working really well together. You’re gonna move really fast when dragonriding too, much faster than existing mount speeds. Taking off there should be a giant gust of wind and a big flap of your wings,” Jeremy adds. “Our environment team is doing a great job incorporating things like more cloud layers so that you can fly through clouds and get that feeling of moving really fast. And then as you start to speed up and go faster and faster you’ll see particles fly off your wings. And eventually that turns into contrails.”

“A big push was to make the experience of moving around the world feel more three dimensional,” Jeremy continues. “That idea of conservation of momentum, of caring about when you stop, because you don’t want to stop, you want to keep going fast. How do I get from A to B as fast as possible? Finding those different spires to jump off of becomes an interesting thing to look for as you’re traversing the world.”

Ok ty for letting me know im reading it but i’m not 100% sure he is referring exactly to fly freely. He talks about mechanics. And we have already seen they certainly fly but doing attack mechanics. he describes they fly the same way as the dragonriding drakes regarding their flying style. It could be maybe it just me i cant figure this out.

If you watch the recap clips, the devs show and explain abilities that let you glide and hover while doing breath attacks. Like a strafing flame and a hold breath attack that you move side to side with

I just hope they can fly on their own outside of the Dragon Isles. Currently, it sounds like they will require mounts to fly in older zones. Definitely not a bad idea to get the Sandstone Drake mount just in case.

well they can use 2 systems to avoid that

Druid flying

Worgen racial mount
