Why does WoW not update its game engine and core software? Everyone knows about the old spaghetti code and it just causes nothing but problems these days. Even the devs acknowledged that things are so old and intertwined that they add one thing to the game and it could break something totally unrelated. That’s probably at least one reason why there are so many bugs and problems with every patch now, so why not update things to the newest game engine?
the short answer: that is a massive undertaking.
You’re absolutely right.
Sorry, must have slipped past them.
(I think it probably ain’t worth how much effort it’ll be).
Imagine being asked to redo the foundation of the Empire State Building
Yeah should be easy enough, while they are at it, make wow 2 as well and classic plus, oh and might as well do next gen graphics
Don’t worry op i’m on it!!! Give me 25-30 minutes pls
Wondering why we’re not on UE5 already? Anyone know??
Not to mention that even if they were to do that they would have to completely shut down the game for weeks on end
I love it when people ask questions about things they don’t understand.
This will also reduce the accessibility of the game to people who play on lower spec systems, thus possibly losing a portion of the player base.
I have a story about that.
During my gamedev arc, I was working on a number of MMO tools. In making and running them I came to realise that particular MMO ran best on Windows 7 particularly on a small defragmented HDD. Made something about the way it would read from the .idx file work better.
I don’t think WoW is as janky but I haven’t done as much testing.
Even if they wanted to I seriously doubt the current staff has the technical ability to do so. They struggle to release a simple 10-minute zone event.
Why would Blizzard pay for the garbage Unreal engine when they have their own engines?
there’s a massive difference between developing in the “releasing content for the existing engine” sense and developing in the “building a new engine” sense
I sincerely hope you weren’t taking that seriously were you?
Blizz uses their own proprietary engine, which makes the game stand out from the rest of its competition.
I don’t think it’s a good idea to use UE5 engine
I don’t think it would have to result in downtime, but it would mean that Siege of Orgrimmar would no longer be the longest tier the game’s had, by not even close.
I don’t think there’s anything they could add to a patch that would make it last 18-36 months.
I agree.
I was tongue-in-cheek following the way the OP made their suggestion.
ok lol
If they update the game engine that might be it for me. I was barely able to get TWW running on this 8800gtx/i5-670 gaming rig, which took a lot of driver voodoo to make it work.
If they update the visuals again there’s just no way I could continue playing. This current engine has been great for us low budget gamers, so my vote is for them to stick with it and not forget their core audience.
Exactly. If you can’t get some mobs to spawn on a timer, which isn’t anything new, I have a hard time believing you could build a new engine.
