Unsure if fault with ISP or elsewhere?

So, I live in Australia but play on NA primarily. For several years my ping was stable on NA realms between 220-260, which I have no problems with.

During the timerunning event I was having issues where my ping on NA realms would skyrocket to 500-5000, but figured it was probably just a random event.

In the last few weeks, my NA ping has been stable on 375, but often ranging between 375-800.

I know there’s other threads regarding this, however, I’m not that tech savvy when it comes to this aspect so I’m just unsure if this issue lies with my ISP (Telstra), or if the fault is elsewhere. As much as I love harassing Telstra because they’re absolutely useless, I don’t want to waste my time with them telling me to turn my router off and on again or tell me there’s no issues (like they did when my router was, in fact, disconnecting several months ago).

I’m not sure if this was correct, but I grabbed the IPs from netstat -an | findstar 3724 while just sitting in Isle of Dorn. I’m assuming the issue is somewhere with Telstra, but as anyone who deals with Telstra knows, I’m sure getting them to fix it if it is their issue will be an impossible task.

I and another poster have both been in contact with Telstra now as the WinMTR indicates an issue with some of Telstra further out nodes, with some huge spiking once it hits a specific node along the network.
I’ve contacted them twice personally and they say they have now escalated the issue to specialists, and said I should expect to hear back in 5-7 days

I don’t really know how to tell if it’s resolved outside of doing a WinMTR and seeing the spiking is no longer an issue, so time will tell I suppose

At the end of the day, you, along with your ISP, are at the mercy of the bottleneck at the bottom of the ocean that is the thousands of miles of underwater fiber optic cables.

Here’s a neat interactive map of them all with Telstra selected:
https://www.submarinecablemap.com/submarine-cable/telstra-endeavour

It runs to Hawaii and then from there, follows some other cable to the west coast of the US.

While true, the connection when stable is fine to play on.
Typically connection from Perth is a steady 250ms and it doesn’t fluctuate, so it’s easy to get used to
The issue that poster, as well as myself and some others have had has only been happening the last week or so, and is a result of a clear issue along the network somewhere

You need to use a test like PingPlotter Pro with UDP packets, since most of this test has nodes blocking ICMP (what WinMTR uses).

Unfortunately for myself this has been more or less since TWW launched, however the first week or so is always a bit rough for me.

I did end up contacting Telstra regardless and their only advice was to just use a VPN. Which, it did work, at least when I connect to a Perth server, but I find it a bit ridiculous that paying for another service is their response.

Hopefully it sorts itself out over time.

Oh interesting, the issue since TWW launched may be a different thing then in that case
I’m still in contact with Telstra at the moment and they’ve advanced the case to specialists who are aparently aware of it now.

I am honestly still sceptical about whether they will fix it, as every initial Telstra employee I speak to seems to think restarting my router and adding their “internet optimiser” service to my plan will help

Most ISPs will put game traffic toward the very bottom of their priority lists (think QoS settings on a router). Even more likely when they have to shove a ton of traffic through very few underwater cables leading to other countries. You might get lucky with VPNs here and there, but ISPs also constantly add them to their priority lists as well and likely set them pretty low like gaming traffic.

Small packets with high update rates are strongly disliked by ISPs and can be harder on a server than doing a 500 megabit speed test.

Yeah, I’m not too sure what it is. I’ve had moments where it’s been higher than usual over the years but never for this long. At the very least, it’s been at least for the last month since that’s when I was home sick from work with some virus.

Anything beyond that within TWW was probably a mix of my internet, general server issues, or anything else inbetween.

Regardless, I also have little hope for Telstra fixing anything, ever, lol. I hope they do for your sake, but yeah, had enough negative experiences with them over the very, very long time we’ve been using them that I know their tech support takes a LOT to be escalated, and even then, it’ll likely go nowhere or they’ll just turn around and say there’s no issues.

And, I guess if all else fails I just return back to OCE only realms and never play with long time friends/guild members again.
