I say this both in the theme but also in the graphic setting of things…
if you guys see the artstyle for warcraft 2 for example, it express itself far more brutal, bleedy and dark.
the conflicts are also in that manner, it’s not much about any diplomacy and more about killing and killing.
The gameplay art also can give those vibes of how the horde reminds you of the rpg demon lord army or something, with the orcs, ogres, goblins, demons and all… even the names of the upgrades for the units are edgy.
now look at warcraft 3, the orcs and human story entire thing is about coming to terms with each other, peace and all.
the tauren and trolls join the horde, and they all vibe together on that frequency of “we are all about love of nature, honor, elements and blablabla”.
it’s also cartoonish in the direction that wow took later, instead of the art that warcraft 2 and 1 promoted.
WoW is based off of Warcraft 3s art style and story.
Keen observation here Copernicus.

WC3 did change things up a good bit yeah. Same for Diablo 3.
Dang 3’s!
i know it may look like this… but there’s many people that will point out of how wow used to have an old vibe that wow now simply does not have, and they point to warcraft 3 on that.
if it was point out to warcraft 2 i would have agreed, but i did made this post just because i wanna point it out to people that warcraft 3 vibes are nothing of the orc vs humans thing.
As I understand it, the original WoW engine was a derivative of WC3s.
I know back in the day, after the beta ended, I went back and played WC3. What a great introduction to WoW lore is was. I knew a heck of a lot more about what was going on up through Wrath by playing WC3 than I ever did play WoW itself.
I’d pay $$$ for a WC3 scenario pack that did a rundown of the lore of the other expansions. I think a set of 10 “Legion” scenarios, for example, would be a great story teller technique.

Yeah, the dragons in Warcraft 2 had hair. Now they are all bald.
It makes plenty of sense that Warcraft III is closer in style to WoW than it is to the previous RTS games. Warcraft III and WoW were in development at the same time, and some devs worked on both. The main plots of the first two WoW expansions are essentially sequels to The Frozen Throne.
I believe you’re correct. StarCraft II also used a derivative of Warcraft III’s engine. HotS was built on the StarCraft II engine, which makes sense considering that it was made in response to DotA, which started out as a mod of Warcraft III.
There’s definitely an erroneous assumption by the game that players during Wrath would know the story of Warcraft III and that therefore no exposition is needed.
It’s almost like the artistic vision evolved as the budget went up, the hardware got better, and time advanced. WHO COULD HAVE THOUGHT???
