I find the lore, especially that behind the origin of all the different races, to be very interesting so I sometimes spend a bit of time on the wiki reading up on it.
Something that struck me as odd was Night Elves being able to become mages. Night Elves being opposed to the arcane is a pretty impactful driving factor in the origin of them as they are now. Did we learn nothing from Azshara?
I came here to see how many people are playing something where
their race/class. I’ll admit I’m a little disappointed the OP wasn’t one of them. It really is my favorite thing to giggle at when I see these posts.
It really comes down to what do you consider “bent out of shape” when it comes to lore. If one was a Warcraft purist, there were a number of changes in the original release of WoW that bent the lore out of shape.
Tauren druids for one. Druidism was the magic style of Night Elves, period. Tauren were shamans. Their whole society was based on shamanism. That’s why shamans use totems, because of the Native American theme of Tauren. And that is totally ignoring the restriction that all druids were male.
Paladins are another. The original “light” was actually “the human spirit.” That sure leaves out a LOT of races besides just Tauren.
And then you mentioned warlocks. Bro, NOBODY should be warlocks. Being a warlock meant you were in league with the Burning Legion, period. They had to bend the lore into a corkscrew to work these guys in.
Night Elf mages are Shen’dralar. They were the ones in Diremaul.
When their leader and his followers went nuts and start draining the two-headed dog demon, a bunch of them fled. They would have died if Tyrande didn’t say they could stay.
The Shen’dralar wasn’t part of Azshara’s inter court. They stayed out of all of that and were just librarians and alchemist. So it was a lot easier for Tyrande to “forgive” them as opposed to someone that was in Azshara’s inner court… if they weren’t turned into a snakefish of course.
Plus, it actually makes no sense for Tyrande to be all scruffled about mages. Does she not work along side Jaina, Khadgar and a number of other mages?

Tauren Druids were mentioned during the Rexxar campaign of Warcraft 3, they have always been a thing.
And early WoW actually explained female druids quite well.
They had zero female Archdruids and said only within the past few years did they begin accepting women as novices because so many died during Warcraft 3’s events.
Back then if you played a female Night Elf druid you had to accept the fact your character basically sucks as a druid and is a novice, which was acceptable to me.
These are not the same thing. At least for me. Having a freakout giggle meltdown would be really weird.

It is not my responsibility to prove you wrong. The burden of proof is on the person making a claim. Otherwise I can simply say “you are wrong” and under your criteria that is an thorough refutation. I gave you the courtesy of not just calling you a liar. As I said, I did even go above and beyond and Google it. And by your standards, finding nothing is proof you are wrong.
I’m actually quite calm. Leaning back in my chair, wrapped in a blanket, still in my pajamas. Finished drinking my beverage about 5 minutes ago. Going to meet my mom for lunch later today. Its going to be a pretty chill day.

This restriction only makes sense in an RPG world, which WoW hasn’t been for quite some time. These days WoW (like most modern MMOs) is a dress-up fantasy game, you come, dress up as something you think is cool, and kill monsters for various reasons.
If you want to play a strict RPG, try DnD or WoW Classic.
I don’t care about the lore. Never have and probably never will. You want the same racial restrictions like the “good ol’ days”? Classic is there for you, go enjoy it.

totally disagree. being limited to tauren was the worst and troll is only marginally better: i don’t like playing either of them. and here we are, 20 years later and it’s still cow and troll as the only druid choices on horde. blah i say! BLAH! i really do envy NE druids for sure.

The people who care that much about story are not playing WoW (especially modern WoW) of all things. They are playing single player games where the writing is actually good. Or at the very least, a better MMO like FFXIV.
