Unpopular opinion, monk class totally ruins the idea of a martial artist

As a Muay Thai fighter monks appealed to me more than any other class, until I actually played them. For me they are too Steven Segal and not enough martial artist, the moves are too kung fu and corny, like fist of fury is some wing Chung sh!t and I don’t know any martial art where you twirl 3x in a row, maybe a ballerina if you consider that a martial art, and all the summons and other garbage that have nothing to do with a martial artist ruin it even more. I’m curious how other people feel, and I hope one day they either scrap monk and rework it or add a real striker class that actually feels like a hand to hand combatant.

We’re all toons. So it’s okay in my opinion. It’s all fun.

The animations could really use some touch ups, and even plain 'ol changes. Spinning crane kick in particular is just…blarg, imo. And it has the double whammy of looking awful to me, and it has a weird disjointed tank design decision where the monk is doing AoE damage but not anything that really contributes to defensiveness. But you gotta use it for damage and aggro, so…Urgh. Really happy MoH introduced that passive to do 15(now 20%) of some single target attacks in a cone to lessen reliance on SCK cause I’ve hated it for a while.

The current monk is very different from the original mop monk…

That’s because it’s not a martial artist, it’s a fighting game and wushu film made into a video game class lol

SCK is Tatsumaki, Ryu is cool

Wild complaint honestly

I think most people would prefer monk to lean more into Street Fighter and Dragonball stylisation. An MMA style would lack flair and be too restrictive.

Ya Monk animations are a bit exaggerated. At least its not as corny as XIV. Aeolian Edge made me quit that game

Nah if it was that itd be cool, but its not that unfortunately

While I agree with you that I would prefer a more authentic example of real world martial arts in this game, I’m afraid that’ll never happen. Many people fail to see that Warcraft in general is more akin to a cartoon or comic book than more realistic fantasy settings where you’d likely see an accurate version of actual martial arts.

So instead of seeing Muay Thai, Karate, or Kung-Fu, you’re going to get Dragon Ball Z and that’s about it.

You’re taking it WAY too seriously.

I wish it was dragon ballz instead of tiger summon you just go supersaiyan and instead of spliting into 3 you throw out a big bang attack

If monks can actually hit hard visual and sound feedback wise, I wouldn’t bother playing any other class for the rest of WoW’s life. See D3 Monk

The spinning crane kick is the only move that’s dumb/cringe and needs a rework. The rest are fine (especially blackout kick, it’s a straight up Spinning Hook Kick from Taekwondo). Also keep in mind, this is a fantasy martial artist class who can shoot lightning, teleport/levitate, instantly heal mortal wounds and who’s blows eject energy on contact as strong as any weapon. It also incorporates Asian/Chinese mysticism because it’s…a MONK. A Monk by definition is a spiritual devotee. So, it’s not the best to compare the techniques to Muay Thai or some other plain striker. Again, it’s a fantasy martial arts class steeped in mysticism. P.S. It’s nothing like Steven Segal who is a fat, phony grappler.

I, for one, found my 500 pound Panda monk doing a flying kick like 100 yards and then spinning around like a top incredibly Steven Segal in all the best ways.

I may actually switch my main.

Only the pandas do tiger palm and RSK right. Everyone else looks awkward.

chi burst cast is straight up hadouken.
idk if race animations make a difference, but as Blood Elf I love the animations.

Outside of “brewmaster” brews and such, I actually think Monks capture “kung fu” pretty well.

Auto atacks look good. With some great foot work.
TP - straight up punch that makes ur heart skip a bit. Got whole ramp up and moving body forward for that extra punch
RSK - staight out of fantasy books - back flip kick! It’s awesome
BOK looks great too
Leg Sweet is a high agile animation. Smooth as a rose petal.

Blackout Kick doesn’t really make any sense for Brewmaster - the technique involves doing a full 360 spin (breaking eye contact with our target), which is silly when there are 5 enemies attacking us

What’s even more frustrating is that Blizzard recognized this and gave Brewmaster “Blackout Strike” in Legion, which looked and sounded amazing, and made more sense aesthetically

In other words, Brewmasters need to have steady footing to be able to roll with and dodge incoming attacks. BoK, SCK and RSK don’t fit into that theme

Actually BrM needs to be swaying and on its back (then breakdance twist kick or springboard back up) more since it’s based on fantasy drunken boxing.

In fact the strength of drunken fists is it’s unpredictability, having your back to the enemy isn’t that out of place.

you’re confusing “unpredictable” with “nonsensical”

go ahead and turn your back to 5 people trying to hit you, you’ll be unpredictable all the way to the floor

“damn im crazy look how i cant see you guys anymore”

facing forward and keeping your feet steady is what allows BrM to have the agility to dodge and brush off incoming attacks. Doing roundhouse kicks and backwards flips would only make it easier to get knocked on your butt

I’m not going to waste too much time on this. Even as a real fighter and martial artist, I can clearly separate real fighting tactics and fantasy. You don’t think getting melee range with a monster 80 times your size with lava on the ground is “‘nonsensical”?
