Unpopular Opinion: I miss phase 1 through 3

Although I absolutely love Arathi basin, Zul’Gurub, and AQ etc. I just miss when classic was still ‘new’ before all the bots, gold farming, GDKP, min max meta gaming. I can’t seem to find a normal raid run with MS > OS rolls or soft reserves. Chat is just spammed with GDKP, Boost, WTS, etc. Every time I seem to look for a raid it’s “GDKP 500g flash”. I’m sorry I don’t participate in your gold buying, I’m just trying to play the game normally.

BWL / ZG / PvP was the golden era of WoW, where the top gear from PvE and PvP were on par and nothing was outrageous in terms of power. Only thing that would make it better is Dungeon 2 set being available which it wasn’t.

AQ is the slow start of the decline that lead to retail.

phase 2 was the best phase of wow classic by far. this was when honor was introduced and battlegrounds were still being held off for phase 3. unfortunately the only way to bring that level of world pvp back would be to significantly change the game.

^ This.

A couple weeks ago, I started looking around to see if I could find a decent home to start a fresh Classic journey, play through the leveling zones questing and running instances with groups, rather than boosting.

By the time I was level 5 as a Human Warrior on Whitemane, I found (or rather was found) by the guild <PuG Whitemane>. I hoped it might be an OK leveling guild, and decided to check it out.

Well, almost 2 weeks later, I’ve run every dungeon that I’ve wanted to, multiple times; mostly with a full guild group (but every now and then, we’ve looked for an additional healer or dps in /LookingForGroup), even including instances that you might expect having difficulty finding groups for, like Wailing Caverns, Blackfathom Deeps, Razorfen Kraul, and Razorfen Downs.

We had over 150 guildies online last night during peak hours, and over 50 at around 2am when I logged off… mostly working together, helping each other conquer quests and instances, while leveling and enjoying the game the way we want to.

I thought so, too! That was definitely the most fun I’ve had playing WoW, ever.

Yeah… if they decided to bring out different flavors of WoW Classic servers to give people some options, it might be interesting to see one of them offer a PVP realm without Battlegrounds, but with Honor and Ranking.

I miss everyone being out in the world leveling. But that was always going to be a temporary situation and would be so even on a fresh server. That said I wouldn’t mind a server with regular resets.

Based on LFG and Tradechat I’d say it is… Unless my server is just heavily plagued by GDKP / Gold farmers…? Are other servers better?

I agree, the boosting and GDKP runs are awful for the game and its overall lifespan. THAT wasn’t a vanilla experience (and even if it was, it wasn’t known to 90% of the players). I do miss the days of running dungeons & raids without gold being a common commodity as Blizzard was on top of keeping gold selling out of WoW in the early days.

It’s obvious Blizzard’s handlers now are cut from a much different cloth than when WoW was created.

Low pop servers don’t have this problem, but less open world encounters leveling

probably my favorite was phase 2, maybe 3 because BWL is pretty neat.

Anything after that felt unnecessary, but it is part of classic adventure so still fun. But I would have been perfectly happy if we were permanently stuck in phase 2 or 3.

I agree with some others. This is not an unpopular opinion and that’s why people ask for fresh.

I also agree with the poster that said phase 2 pre-BGs was amazing (I do not consider THIS a popular opinion because I think only about 5% of the population feels this way). I thought honor pre-BGs it was amazing in Vanilla and I thought it was amazing in Classic. I love world PVP and small scale those skirmishes we had. Before anyone says “well you’re horde” well my server was 55% alliance so we were outnumbered all the time. That was still fun.

As for the rest yeah making friends and then ending up being guilded with them and raiding with them. Then you’d gear up together, rep grind together. All that stuff. That was pretty awesome. Like I said this is why people ask for fresh.

This is like my dream and was definitely my dream in Vanilla. It will never happen but it would be awesome.

This is definitely true. Having my alliance characters on a small server and my horde characters on a large server (actually, Grob horde, which is where OP is posting from), I definitely think the positives of a small server outweigh the negatives.

On a smaller server, GDKP isn’t prevalent (on the alliance side on Deviate Delight there’s only one that runs every week and no others), but true pug raids are hard to find too, you pretty much need to join a guild run. However, it’s also easier to find a guild run because the population is smaller and people are eager to recruit able bodies. We take non-guild members on our guild raids regularly and many of them stick around and ultimately become members of the guild, and others don’t but still enjoy themselves.

Leveling & dungeons is the best part of Vanilla WoW. Raiding really exposes all the poor design issues with many classes/specs, as well as the uneven & crappy gear itemization - which ultimately breaks the game IMO. TBC (& even WotLK) did a lot to course-correct those problems before the game drove off a cliff later on. That is why TBC & WotLK are probably considered the “golden age” of WoW to most veteran players.

Game went off a cliff in TBC with flying mounts and resilience. Your upgrades from raiding and PvE content aren’t as impactful because you need to stack resilience in order to be able to survive. It sucks if you’re a PvE/WPVP only player.

It’s going to be horrible for some trying to farm in TBC between the botters/hackers influx from Classic and PvPers geared to the teeth from arena.

How is expecting people to PvP to get the best PvP gear (with some exceptions) a bad thing? This is how it’s supposed to work. PvP gear also isn’t difficult to get, unlike the massive grind it was in vanilla.

on atiesh, i’m in an alliance guild that does soft reserves.

Because it makes doing PvE content pointless - you might as well grind arena all day in order to be most effective in the open world. Which I hate to break it to ya, interactions in the open world is what an MMO is all about.

Anyway if that’s your kind of thing don’t worry about it, you’ll soon get to relive the “glory days” of TBC.

Massively unpopular opinion: WoW Classic PVP is awful after honor came out.

Before honor South shore and Tarren Mill were SO MUCH FUN.
