Unpopular opinion? BfA questing kind of sucked

So, I’m leveling a DH right now and as such I’ve been question through Legion. I’ve heard people saying that for all the problems BfA has, at least the questing was solid.

I have to say, playing through these Legion quests, I completely disagree. These quests are fantastic. BfA questing is so bland and stock-standard in comparison.

Think about it…what is the BfA equivalent of journeying to Helheim and battling for the release of your soul? That whole sequence was so cool, all that detail put in just for questing. What about Highmountain? The flashbacks to the War of the Ancients, getting to play as Huln Highmountain and see the creation of the Highmountain Tauren. Or helping Mayla through her chieftain’s right of passage with Ebonhorn and getting to discover through spirit visions that he’s actually a black dragon.

Then, of course, I don’t even want to get started on Suramar. That’s just next level good.

BfA not only sucks mechanically and content-wise, but the questing is bland and uninspired too. The stories are barely interesting and there aren’t cool scenarios like the ones I’ve mentioned here. The only thing holding BfA together is the art and music, and even still IMO Legion had much better zones aesthetically. The world felt really big whereas BfA feels small to me.

I dunno, this is just something I picked up on while leveling. I see a lot of people saying “at least BfA has good questing” and I just completely disagree.

Unpopular opinion indeed :frowning:

What’d you like about it? I’m not tryna be combative I’m just actually curious as to why it didn’t resonate with me but maybe did with other people.

The Helheim sequence was my least favorite part of Legion questing. All in all, I think Legion questing was really good, but the removal of artifact weapon abilities really hurts it now. As for BFA, I’ve enjoyed the questing for the most part. The only thing I really disliked was that quillboar chain in Stormsong.

I’ve got 3 minutes before I have to leave for work so I can’t write anything in-depth until later. I’ll organize my thoughts a bit and post a ramble here when I get home

So random… So unnecessary… why was it ever there?

I liked it because I was really impressed that an entire little environment was crafted just to serve this one questline. It had it’s own entire aesthetic and it really felt like a whole different world, and you’re only there for like 30 minutes. It was exciting to get to go to this new, strange place, and the effort put into it for just being a small part of a larger quest chain was amazing to me.

I haven’t seen anything like that in BfA. There doesn’t feel like there’s any creativity when it comes to the quests like there was in Legion. They just feel like normal, boring WoW quests.

Hellheim equivilant? At least alliance side it was the saving Jaina’s sanity questchain. Damn good stuff. Not sure if there was a horde equivilant. Maybe the saurfang zappyboi stuff? Dunno havent played it. And knaifu/waifu questline, albeit short, was kinda epic too.

I wasnt a huge fan of suramar but i know it was overall a success. Enemy density was just too much at times. Storyline was decent though. And legion zones were small in comparison… overall landmass bfa has more and the zones are larger.

Also we havent even gotten to the end game zones yet. We are just now breaking into those when 8.2 releases.

I liked Stormsong, Drustvar and Tiraguarde sound were a real slog though.

I hated both questing experiences in both Legion and BfA. But, I prefer Legion. BfA leveling is a drag that gets very stale very fast. Only good part about it is that the storyline is leaps and bounds ahead of the Legion storyline.

Thank you for being brave enough to share such an unpopular opinion.

Np, I feel brave.

I still don’t get why it seems like people liked BfA questing more, though.

I would say the questing has been amazing since MoP tbh.

MoP has the Jade Forest, VotFW, Krasarang Wilds, and Kun Lai, all of which were amazing.

WoD overall has a fantastic questing experience, every zone was really well done

Legion was a little worse due to it being the first implementation of the pick your own zone style, but all the zones were standout, just not cohesive.

BfA has done it the best so far, each zone has tons of memorable moments imo.

I’m starting to think maybe it’s because I’m thinking of the Horde side quests? I haven’t experienced the Alliance quests and most of the people here saying it’s great seem to be Alliance.

I was just about bored to tears with the Horde quests though, especially in Vol’dun, which to me could not have been more generic.

Zone by zone nothing stands out in BFA for me.

As for the War Campaign the horde just get screwed. It only works if you are playing a forsaken character (which feels awesome). Any other race is just… why am I stealing corpses and totally ok with this just because the zombie is my warchief now?

The little Darkshore sequence was ok on both sides. Felt immersive and interesting.

The dagger chain felt stupid and wrong. At least stuff a brain sucking squid monster on my head if I am going to make completely terrible decisions and unleash and evil thing for no reason despite having a ton of priests literally everywhere I could have asked for help from…

The questing in BFA was good. I feel it wasn’t as good as Legion, which is a bummer because that could be said about a lot of things when comparing BFA and Legion. It’s as if BFA is Legion Lite.

BfA quests are just backported world quests but with next to no reward. I can remember what I did from vanilla all through legion in quests. But can’t be bothered to remember what happened outside of drustvar, the initial storyline of stormsong and the overarching Jaina rescue questline to unlock siege of Boralus.

I don’t mind questing through Broken Shore on my alts, but I waited for timewalking once they hit 110 so I wouldn’t have to do any BfA questing. Doing it once on Horde and once on Alliance to see both sides has been enough for me. I can’t make it through another Vulpera campaign…I just can’t.

BfA questing was pretty shallow imo. I did not get the same vibe as I did in Legion that’s for sure. To me, BfA questing felt like a rinse and repeat of kill X mobs, go talk to that guy then kill a mini-boss.

Move to the next quest hub, hey you! You want some quests? How about you kill X mobs, then talk to that guy in that cavern, then kill that oversized Yeti chilling over there.

Felt like a burden rather than something cool to do until level cap. Thanks to timewalking events, I barely completed the first zone on my alts and just ran those over and over. Just plowed through 110-120 that way it was lightning fast since I could tank on most of my alts. On top of that, at 120, Cataclysm timewalking events dropped 365 ilvl gear that could WF to 375 and it was pretty frequent. A real paradise to get that ilvl up asap to quickly access warfronts and other stuff.

Bonus: I had enough timewalking badges to get from nothing to exalted with the Angler and get that sweet waterstrider mount.

But yeah I’m with you on this. I liked Legion questing more than BfA. I have to admit that Drustvar was nice though. The creepy mood was set and the music supported it.

Yes! This is my exact feeling.

With Legion, I felt like I was being taken through a crafted narrative. BfA was just so phoned in to me. I’m someone who really loves lore and stories and the RPG/creative aspects of this game, and again the word that comes to mind is “uninspired”. Just not a lot of thought or effort put into it, at least on Horde side.

I also liked Drustvar from what I’ve experienced of it. It was the only zone where I felt like some creativity was exercised.

I think you’re just starting the conversation a little sideways. No-one is saying that BFA’s questing was better than Legion’s. People are just saying that the leveling quests are good.

It doesn’t have to be the best to be good. Wrath had the best leveling ever, but I won’t say Legion’s was garbage simply because wrath was better.

BFA zones are engaging, and mostly-unique so a lot of people like them.
