Unpopular Opinion: Baldur's Gate 3 is trash

Show me a DND mob that does 2d4+4 damage at level 1?
Feats don’t work how they should so instead of being strong and useful like they are in real DND, they are at best, minor perks.
The controls. If I hadn’t spent $60 for this game this alone would be enough by itself for me to quit.

I am really upset that the game is so slow that it took me like 5 hours of playing to realize that this game was trash, and therefore too late for me to refund. Almost feels like a scam a little bit if you think about it.

Which is a shame because the story seems pretty cool, too bad everything else about the game is so awful. Although I guess I am thankful too, because it makes me realize how great actual DND is.

inb4 shut up and go play DND, I do - 3 days a week.

lol what? The Feats in BG3 are exactly how they work in tabletop 5th Edition. Mostly, situational and very build-dependent to be effective. This is why 5th Edition also has Ability Score Increase baked in as an option instead of taking a feat because for most builds, ability score is more important than situational-use perks.

I’m not sure I understand what’s so difficult about “hold left mouse button to move, click to move to point, right-click for context menu, arrow/WASD for camera movement.”

Seems like your argument is all hyperbole and no actual substance.

hey… What about the underrated gem of DnD that is Dark Sun? Do you know how angry I am that they didn’t release Dark Sun online, which would be Ultima Online’s rival at that time?

Real D&D doesnt have feats. Weak D&D watered down for the masses does. No one with an ounce of respect uses 3rd-5th Edition.

Face it, BG3 is too hard for you and you need your hand held just like in the board game.

Anyway, no game is enjoyed by 100% of the people that play it and its too bad you didnt get your money’s worth. Perhaps something like Undertale is more up your ally. Really easy.

They do not.
Spell Sniper (BG3):
You learn a cantrip, and the number you need to roll a Critical Hit while attacking with a spell is reduced by 1. This effect can stack.
Missing: Cover bonuses.

Athlete
Your Strength or Dexterity increases by 1, to a maximum of 20.
When you are Prone, standing up uses significantly less movement. Your jump distance also increases by 50%.
Changed: You should use 5 feet of movement to stand up from prone but this makes you use half your movement.

Actor
Your Charisma increases by 1, to a maximum of 20.
Your Proficiency Bonus is also doubled for Deception and Performance Checks.
Grants Deception Proficiency and Performance Proficiency.
missing: * You can mimic the speech of another person or the sounds made by other creatures. You must have heard the person speaking, or heard the creature make the sound, for at least 1 minute. A successful Wisdom (Insight) check contested by your Charisma (Deception) check allows a listener to determine that the effect is faked. (This part isn’t even offered, its just “performance checks” If the feat offered unique dialogue options like “hey im bob, not dave” then that might be different.

So a few more gripes:
You can just attack the air. The game lets you because the controls are trash.
You can just shoot spells at nothing on accident because the UI and controls are trash.
You can move to weird bad areas easily because the controls are trash.
You can accidentally attack allies without any confirmation because the logic and controls are trash. (inb4 you might want to attack allies to remove spells, I am aware of that, but its uncommon enough it should be a confirmation, and considering how trash the controls are and how easy it is to accidently do - ) trash.
The game takes ages to be able to swap between characters. When I ungroup the party and try to click someone so I can move them, it takes like 5 solid seconds before I can even do it. Trash.
I was in the cavern where you rescue a couple humans from gnolls, the one filled with alcohol - the camera panned to above the mountain, I couldn’t even see inside. I had to TP to camp and back somewhere else to be able to move again. TRASH.
When did level 1 mobs start doing 2d4+4 damage? because the hyenas with the gnolls do. Trash
When did basic regular gnolls get a triple bow attack for what had to be at least 1d10 per shot? Trash
When did level 5 paladins get a triple multiattack? double multiattack at level 5 im fully aware of that, but triple? and then smites and spellsmites on top of all of that? level 5 paladins only have 6 total spell slots, but the quest dude for karlach homie has unlimited. He double and triple attacked with smite every single turn and spell slots were a suggestion for him apparently. TRASH.
Every single mob that uses a bow or crossbow has explosive aoe arrows, every single one. Everything leaves crap on the ground. Everything has multiattack at like level 2. EVERYTHING. The players play by DND rules but the mobs are all some crappy homebrew that some kid who wants to kill the PC’s would do if he was GM. TRASH

And once again for context - I dont die in combat, I don’t fail at progressing. I have only wiped about 3-4 times by the time I got to level 5, I just shouldn’t have to spam potions (which are not even used right in the game) and use a long rest after EVERY. SINGLE. COMBAT.

Finally before you reply with more … of anything. I already said it was an unpopular opinion, and that’s also something you need to keep in mind - it’s my opinion. I could say I think having a million dollars is stupid and guess what? no facts or logic change that I think that, because it’s my opinion. Anyways hope you enjoyed the read.

You want DnD video game calamity?
Play ‘Descent to Undermountain’.
Video games always have to adjust the rules to fit, just like homebrews do for each rpg table top group.

You’re right, I am overly critical of games lately, at least for the last 10 years. But at the same time it’s my prerogative to be overly critical.

You’re also not wrong about homebrewing.

You’re not alone in becoming critical of modern games. I feel the same way about the majority of new releases. Gamers hype up a product then quickly abandon it now. I swear I’ve heard people say 10 different games were GOTY this year then after a month they’re onto the next product. To me everything just feel re-hashed now.

I haven’t played BG3 though so I probably shouldn’t be in this thread.

I think it’s an age thing, and an availability thing. When I was 12 and Final Fantasy 2 was all I had, I loved it. If I was a kid nowadays I probably would think a a game like FF2 was balls. Because I don’t play fortnite as an adult but I promise you I probably would have if I was a zoomer.

These are two great points. My taste is more refined as I’ve aged and accessibility to games has made me more picky. When games were expensive I played what my parents bought me or rented.

I still believe my biggest problem is a lack of innovation though. The industry has consolidated too much and all that’s left are huge AAA companies and small indies. Look at how many companies EA and Activison have eaten up over the years. Raven makes map packs for CoD, and they made some great games.

Nothings really changed over the last 10 years. Everything looks and plays exactly the same now as it did back then but with a shinier coat of paint. I really believe the 2000’s was peak gaming. All the modern games we play today came out back then but without todays micro transactions.

I still find games here and there that I like but it’s not anywhere near as often as back then.

A couple of things:

  1. Camera can be not great, no disagreements there
  2. Attacking nothing is also not great, I’ve done that. Also, I’ve run past enemies. You can save scum but also you do get used to how this all works fairly quickly.
  3. It sounds like you went straight to the gnoll area? That is a pretty tricky area, you probably want to explore around the druid grove first.
  4. You can play on a controller which does not have the point-and-click interface, maybe you’d prefer it.

I did the blighted village, auntie ethel area, all the basements and caves in all those places all before I went to the paladin/karlach area, and the gnoll area last, in fact. I was level 4 fighting the gnolls. Would fighting them at a lower level make them not have level 1 hyenas doing 2d4+4 damage, or do triple bow attacks?

I don’t think it would.

To be fair to you the triple attack gnoll hunters are an often debated encounter in this game as they appear early and rip through you and 5e gnolls can’t usually do this. I think the fight is homebrewed to be difficult because if you damage the gnoll leader enough you can brain tadpole her into eating the other gnolls.

It is entirely doable btw. Cloud of daggers does wonders on that fight because the gnolls tend to group together.

I know you’re trying to be helpful but I said before and I feel like no matter who I talk to about disliking the game they keep getting the impressive I am failing and hard stuck on combat when that’s not the case. I killed the gnolls first try. It was just egregiously over the top annoying af and I hated it. it wasn’t balanced or fun or interesting, it just felt like they all gotta hella attacks and did crazy high damage. Did a couple of my dudes get downed? of course. Did I still manage to kill them because I saw them a mile away and snuck around and did strong sneak attack opener? also yes.

It’s probably not a genre for you. It’s turn-based hard systems RPG (not hard as in difficult, hard is in VERY SYSYEMS-y) and this one is very heavily based on the studio’s previous game Divinity: Original Sin 2.

Some fights can be a bit cheesy. The gnolls are definitely one of them. I guess I enjoy that because eventually, you can cheese the fights right back. My first character was an ambush-based assassin/gloomstalker and at the beginning of combat, I could basically pick one or two enemies and delete them before they could do anything.

Personally, I found the beginning of the game to be the most difficult when I didn’t have feats or decent abilities or gear yet. And I missed a lot.

I play dnd 3 times a week, it’s not the systems behind the game I dislike lol.

The systems can be very different, at least they are to me in feeling, when playing a PC game vs sitting at the table.

At the very least my DM lets me be more creatively stupid than Larian does.

Yeah that’s pretty unpopular
