Unofficial Sethrak Discussion Thread 🐍

Ugh. Maybe if the gnomes really are a new race they'd be paired with Gilblins or something. Or just make the mechanical bits into added customisation for the standard gnomes.

And then if we noticed a preponderance of really big, tough-looking races on one side or really charming, cool, cute-looking races on the other, then we try to do a little bit of a rebalance. Those profiles and those aesthetics are really important. We didn’t want everyone on the Horde to look ugly, right?

Pretty sure I've quoted this interview before, but it's particularly relevant now. The intention with the Vulpera is clear; give the Horde a small, cute race to balance out their big, tough races. To have cyborg gnomes be the Alliance counterpart would be so wrong; they add nothing new to the faction. They're the same small, techy race we already have, just with "more tech". They fit the exact same niche as the standard gnomes.

We need a less human-like race to spice up the Alliance. Don't just go with "We didn’t want everyone on the Horde to look ugly, right? But the Alliance can have the same stuff they've already got, 'cause who cares about those twerps? Lok'tar Ogar!"

You are aware that your last paragraph is the exact thinking of Blizzard. They design Horde first, and whatever scraps they have left they give to the Alliance. The devs have said this multiple times at multiple blizzcons.

I'm not shocked Alliance got Mecha gnomes, I was calling that they would be getting them from day 1 and they'd be paired with vulpera. Just... I dind't htink they'd look so god awful.
Why on earth would you be concerned that Mechagnomes would kill possibility for Sethrak? Unless you were thinking that the Sethrak had some kind of connection to gnomes that no-one has brought up yet, this shouldn't really be a concern at all. Vulpera being paired with Mechagnomes still wouldn't prevent sethrak from being released in a later patch. Like, at all.

If anything, you should be concerned if you start seeing signs of a worgen allied race in the works. That's your key threat.
I support danger noodles and wish to play as one.

Welp, looks like Sethrak might be Horde after all. Mecha Gnomes and Vulpera are a set I can see Blizzard doing, with Sethrak and another race being the other pair after.

ALTHOUGH I can see Naga and Sethrak being a pair, and if thats true I can see Sethrak going Alliance and Naga going Horde. (I don't think Tyrande would do well with Naga going Alliance, sadly.)

Actually, seems might have something for Alliance, but itsn't Naga nor Sethrek. One of the creatures they mentioned alliance will be working with in Najatar.

One on the far right.

I know it isn't first choice, but it isn't a bad one either. However, this leaves me to dread Sethrek getting stuck in the dreaded neutral NPC friend zone. >.>;

They never said Alliance is getting mechgnomes. They are set up as a neutral faction in one of the zones that's appearing in the future.
Man, what a sh*t show.

All this build up and they don’t reveal anything concrete regarding ARs. We don’t even know if there are anymore after KT and Zandalari.
Business as usual, sadly, but no news is better than being told no.
Really disappointed at the fact that no new allied races were confirmed at blizzcon. Not even the Vulpera who have been all but confirmed since the early alpha builds. I know a lot of people out there are excited for the naga off branch since its the closest thing to naga themselves that fits the player model, but I personally would much prefer Sethrak over two legged naga. I would totally reroll or even race change for Sethrak. Cant say the same for deformed naga. They just look like glorified Jinyu, so that also removes the chance of Jinyu being playable in the future as well. The difference being that they can easily make gendered models for the new naga branch which jinyu didnt have. Probably with boobs, cause naga have boobs.

But I think blizz can still save Sethrak. Give the Devoted to the horde if you must. I will abandon my draenie and worgen for playable sneks, but not for playable snek elves...
Those things don't look like naga to me. They have fish faces, not snake faces, no tail and webbed feet. If anything they look like edgy Jinyu.
Thats exactly how I feel. Im sure there are plenty of people excited for em, but also plenty of those who wanted legit naga disgusted by em

Well they did say they're on the brink of extinction and cant breed anymore or something. So maybe that means they wont be an AR lol.

Blasphemy
Honestly if they're making a brand new fish species then making it playable why not just backroll to the Jinyu and then give Horde a preexisting race.

Only reason i could see them making this a new race to be playable is because of the Vulpera, Blizzard while making dumb decisions at times follows a pattern when it comes to new races i noticed when it comes to releasing races.

Blood Elves - Draenei = preexisting race
Goblins - Worgen = preexisting race
Pandaren went both ways anyway
Highmountain - Lightforged = alternate race
Mag'har - Dark Irons = preexisting subrace
Void Elves - Nightborne = subrace
Kul'tirans - Zandalari = subraces, this is stretching it given Kul'tirans are somewhat new and almost break the pattern

Now if we apply this to now

Vulpera - Sethrak = new races
Vulpera - Cyborg Gnomes = breaks the pattern cause its a new race + alternate race
Vulpera - Jinyu Replacements = technical new races pattern and stops Sethrak or gives them to Horde later

See how that works? they follow a strict pattern which is strangely weird for Blizzard given there love for Horde content.

Bonus examples cause i love ya'll :D

Ogres - Vrykul = preexisting ancestor races of the two main races
Quillboars - Gnolls = preexisting race combo
Hozen - Jinyu = preexisting race
Dragonmaw Orc - Wildhammer Dwarf = preexisting subrace
Wouldnt exactly call Ogres an ancestor race. Maybe to people like Rexxar since hes a hybrid. Speaking of which, Blizz doesnt really do well or support hybrid races it seems. Rexxar is half orc and half ogre and simply looks like a light skinned orc. Garona is half orc half draenei and just looks like a normal orc. And Rhonin and Vareesa's children, Giramar and Galadin just look like normal Belf children. Though its kind of expected in Rexxar and the half elf cases, they didnt even try for Garona whos parents are two massively different species.

But enough about that, it would really be a waste for Sethrak to stay as a neutral race. If they wanted to give us fish people, they should have done that back in pandaland. Jinyu are just murlocs anyways, and murlocs have always been fodder for naga. Why not simply call this another offbrand of murlocs rather than naga with legs?
According to this video Sethrak are not evolved trolls. Sort of an odd question, but it's nice to see some acknowledgement. It is the first question asked.

I guess my issue is the "Why?" of it all. I said from the get-go Blizzard are going to yank our chains for precious marketing hype at the expense of the customer. And it made sense; Blizzard's on convention at a time WoW is in dire need of a morale boost.

Then the stage was set aaaaand...nothing. What's Next was lacking and the Q&A was utterly useless as usual. That's it folks, cya next year. Even the Vulpera are left in limbo which we all know are pretty much good to go right this second.

I just can't get my head around it. The story is moving away from the two races come 8.2. Blizzard are not going to get a better moment to share the news on the races and it is utterly infuriating for those trying to plan out race/class combinations for alts or whatnot because Blizzard refuse to even say "No" on the subject. They continue to yank the chains but now there seems absolutely no point to it even from a cold, purely marketing standpoint.

Did you know, Sethrak can sit on mounts? *thinking emoji*

A little fragment of news about Allied races in here: https://www.wowhead.com/news=288418/blizzcon-2018-interview-with-ion-hazzikostas-and-chris-robinson-azshara-raises-n#allied-races

For Allied Races in general, it comes down to timing. Is a particular Allied Race endearing enough to players? Does it make sense in the story to add them as player characters.

Sethrak get a definite yes to the first, and if added alongside Vulpera before expansion's end that would be yes to the second as well. I really think it would be neat to explore how Vorrik's intentions to reunite the Devoted and Faithless might damage his fragile alliance with the Vulpera and ultimately drive the two races to separate factions.

The problem is the story will be steering away from the Sethrak/Vulpera in 8.2, not towards. The confusing part is Vulpera are caught in this limbo too and all they need to go live is Blizzard to flick the switch.

Again, it's all just so confusing. The obvious time for these races would be during the 8.1>8.2 transition but nothing but a wall of silence and a refusal to answer from Blizzcon. Blizzard's pig-headedness on the issue is getting more than a little infuriating.
