Yes, because right now, a new race like the sethrkas, which players are asking for and for which they’ve shown appreciation, has a chance to bring people back much more than a 9.1.5 Band-Aid.
It’s fast, since the race already has many of the animations ready and it’s cheap.
Blizzard likes to make things cheap and effortless, like sadoland.
It’s a situation where they need to make the game regain prestige and interest. Something that has been throw away from the game since beta for azerith.
Every playable race when added has a set of things that makes them similar to playable races so armors, animations, combat, etc is possible as a player character.
All races that are not designed that way never become a playable race.
That is a “tech” justification.
The speculation made by most on that regard is that Sethrak is actually a Loa direct descending race, and as such, could not be a playable race, much less in the Alliance, and they have nothing to pair with. It would be akin to make Naaru a playable race.
I personally don’t understand that logic and think they are fully capable of being playable races myself. There also isn’t always a pair required. Pandaren are a good example of this. Sethrak being neutral would make the most sense in my personal opinion. I don’t like the idea of pairs needing to connect to one another anyhow. Lots of ‘race pairs’ make no sense.
This is quite a stretch but you’re right, it doesn’t make sense for the Alliance.
Thing is, Blizzard has gone on record to say they’d add allied races where they make sense, even if there isn’t a counterpart on the other side. Granted, this hasn’t happened yet.
To me, the only thing that matters is that you can find in the files datamine long before a race become playable that work is done to make them so. And while it is true that “they can do whatever with the game”, the work involved might not worth it.
For now, and for some time in the future, there will not be a playable sethrak.
If next patch adds the ground work for it, you might take a long time to see it happen.
For now, from what the files tell, there are not plans to make it happen.
That is sadly fair, and I personally do hope they at least look at threads/ideas like these to set the groundwork for the future. Perhaps seeing them in 10.0, or a return to Azeroth. Thus far, we’re likely going to be in Shadowlands for a while yet (given that’s the expansion theme) and to be honest, we likely won’t see ARs for a while.
Still, they could announce they’re working on them at some point soon. Though I’m not sure what they have planned for a ‘blizzconn’. Nothing this year, clearly, but maybe an online thing like last. (what a dumpster fire that was, though.)
I honestly think and hope they pull a WoD on shadowlands and end it hastily to bring something akin to Legion. Shadowlands was meant to do something it is not doing. The story is dragging itself in a myriad of forced conflicts that would not have logic to exist.
That is actually the only thing “in character” I agree about what people say in regards to Sethrak. Every allied race had a reason to join a faction. The Pandaren, Worgen and Goblins had some reason, Worgen a strong one, Goblins a passable one, and Pandaren a idiotic one (lets join half one faction, half another, fight among ourselves to learn useless things no one is actually learning).
Sethrak has no reason to join any faction. They have not presented any inclination or any even curiosity in doing so. IT would be a very inventive thing to come up NOW with a reason, as they have not made up one when the time was right.
Even the Nightborne had a reason to join a faction, the ultimate choice for the Horde was equally dumb and forced, but they were meant to join one faction or another from the start.
I am well aware playable Sethrak are likely a ways off, but I will continue to show them my support in the mean time. Really the main race I am interested in playing as far as future races go. WoW really could use a reptile race.
I’ve waited this long, what’s another year, two or three? (IDEALLY NOT THREE, PLEASE).
Either way, I definitely would like to see their lore touched on more and more story involving them. The Sethrak have fantastic potential.
Sethrak did have much work along those lines for some time.
Shortly after the datamining of Vulpera as an actual player race was found much of that work was encrypted then removed.
That doesn’t mean the work is undone, just that they removed it from the client side files. Likely because they decided they weren’t going to have time. There is ample evidence they may have been considering two more AR’s for BfA.
No one expects new AR until at least 10.0.
Blizzard is on record saying that they take into account what people are saying early then apply that later… so… yeah…
Now is the time to be requesting what you want to see precisely because it will take time.
