A class skin is a special cosmetic theme that you can unlock for a class. In this case, Warlocks can unlock Necromancy as a class skin. This turns their demons into undead and make their spells appear more like death magic. It does not change them mechanically.
To unlock Necromancy, you go through a questline as a Warlock where you learn the secrets of Maldraxxus and study the art of Necromancy from its very source. You wouldn’t have to be a Necrolord to do these quests. By the end, you can become a Necromancer as an optional appearance.
Each expansion could come with one or two new class skins, befitting their theme.

It wouldn’t come with all of the bells and whistles I’d want from a necromancer class but it’d be close enough to make me happy.
Sounds like a fun idea regardless. Could add a “skin” for fury warriors that lets them use a shield too. Beat someone upside the head with it. Gladiator is back, no need for tuning. Easy mode.
It’s not a bad idea, and it could be applied to things like Dark Ranger. Elven hunters of both Horde and Alliance could work for it.
This makes me miss those huge shield slam compilations. Anyway, yes gladiator warrior would be fun.
I like the take on it. Whatever gives me some cosmetic undead options for pets on my lock at this point sounds good. They could even give DKs the same type of quest but give em more DK type skins for their pets too(more Abomination colors/types etc).
When did demonologists become interested in Necromancy?
Not even close to the same school of magic. Chaos and Fel is not Undeath.
Just ask for a new class.

sounds like diablo 3 stuff.
leave it in that franchise
I forget what expansion it was, but there was that brief time where lowbie warriors could shield slam the crap out of people. Literally one shot most players. It was so fun.
I spent so much time leveling warriors in low level pvp just for that reason alone.
Yes it was OP and unfair, but still super fun lol.
Didnt Gul’Dan use the Fel to raise the first deathknights into undeath?

I’d kill for something like that. I’ve always wanted a necromancer class. And every expansion, it seems we fight against necromancers, but we never get to roll one!
No. Shadow Council had Necrolytes, he used the Necromancy and Void powers to transfer souls and create the first Death Knights.
I really wish they’d capitalize on this “class skin” idea and give people a lot of the more “niche” classes they’ve been asking for since the beginning of time.
I just want my Priestess of Elune skin. My holy spells should be silver. That is all.
It’s really the only way a lot of class “themes” would ever happen - Necromancer being chief among them.
And no, Blizzard is not going to implement a whole new class with new mechanics and new numbers to balance when it’s basically just a deviate flavor of something already covered from multiple angles. Blizzard’s already at the point where they refuse to add new talents because balancing things is too hard - a whole new class is going to have to be something truly amazing and/or iconic to the franchise or expansion, and the Necromancer fails on both accounts.
If the Necromancer as a new class didn’t happen in the Death and Afterlife themed expansion, it’s never going to. A “skin” would take barely a fraction of a percent of the work, and is thus far more likely.
Casters can trade one school of magic for another, or practice multiple. See necrolytes. So a warlock could obtain interest in necromancy.
The reason I picked warlocks to get the class skin though is because they’re mechanically very close to necromancers. “Just asking for a new class” is a much taller order than asking for a class skin.
Necrolytes aren’t Warlocks. Their necromancers.
Necrolytes are a type of necromancer who use the dark energies of the Void
The only reason it says their “depiction” overlaps, is because Void. They say they sometimes overlap with Warlocks and Shadow Priests in their depiction, because the Void spells sometimes make them look similar. But they aren’t Fel users. Their abilities are all Necromanctic abilities.
Both are a tall order, dude.
Necromancy doesn’t fit Warlock class fantasy or lore right now. Meaning they’d have to entirely add new lore for this. And then people would want more class skins and the snowball keeps rolling. Meaning more work than you claim.
I’d rather see a new class with as much work would need to go into this skin idea that doesn’t fit our current Warlocks.

Honestly I would really dig a necro skin. I 80-90% play warlock because I enjoyed its parent class, the EQ necro. In before someone says “but death knights.” No, a necro is a type of caster with a pet. A DK is a melee plate wearer with a weaker pet, based on the shadow knight not the necro.
It doesn’t need to be a separate class because dots and a pet was the OG necro. It’d be redundant, but hey if they make it a ranged hero class I’ll definitely take it.
You’re saying a warlock can’t learn necromancy lorewise, but they can. They’d just be trading fel magic for death magic. I think you’re underestimating the workload difference between a class skin and a whole class.
I never said they couldn’t. I said their current class fantasy lore doesn’t support it and it needs new storyline to make sense.
And I think you’re underestimating what needs to go into this. I’ll refer back to my previous post.
This just screams Death Knight to me though and I have a hard time seeing a difference between a death Knight and necromancer.
A new green fire like this would def be cool.
