I am one for playing weird offspec builds. I know some on the pservers have fiddled around with UH Tank before and I am curious how it would be on some fights if anyone knows. I know as UH you are unable to get the biggest talent for DK tanking “Will of the Necropolis” but with bone shield, improved AMS and AMZ they sound amazing for bosses that do mostly all magic damage.
Problem is: There are none.

Have leveled up, and tanked all 5 man content including H+ as unholy.
AOE threat is great, dmg is good, imp AMS and AMZ talents come in handy.
I don’t think it’s main tank viable, as far as raiding is concerned.

Is the basic build I’ve used.
Played the entire last half of wrath as either a Prot warrior or a UH tank. It was a good build and I had a lot of fun with it. DK’s were much neater when THE META hadn’t touched them yet. That said I did mainly OT with it as there are better tank specs a DK can be but unholy is just under viable currently as a tank.
DKs are capable of tanking tons of content in all specs.
That was their design philosophy.
However, given the encounter, some will perform better than others.
Full shield block value warrior will always take less damage than any paladin or DK in physical damage encounter. By a massive difference too. However, paladins get a self free brez on 2m cooldown.
Anyway, during ICC, there are some boss encounters where Frost tank will shine
- Sindragosa does constant frost ticks - frost tree has a talent to boost resistances. With only 1-2 peices of frost gear, totom/buff, DKs reach EXCELLENT resistance, while still being def capped
- Keleseth - constant shadow damage. Same thing as above.

A high avoidance UH tanking build would probably work for everything except Algalon. You lose some important talents but pick up Bone Shield, which is huge. Death Strike healing should be the same because you can pick up 1 point of Crypt Fever.
Basically comes down to Vamp Blood and Will vs Bone Shield in terms of survivability. You can also take a permanent Ghoul to sac at will as long as it isn’t dead. Idk, give it a whirl and see how it goes. Maybe take it a 2nd spec and try it out in 10m.

Stupid idea, unholy does nothing blood or frost won’t do better for tanking.
I tanked as unholy for a while. It can get the job done but you’d rather have vampiric blood or unbreakable armor over bone shield. You might like the AOE from unholy but you don’t need unholy to do it. Frost already does pretty well thanks to howling blast and blood can simply slot morbidity to cut the decay CD.
Another fun cooldown is if you spec into lichborne you can self heal with deathcoil. Unholy OT all the way through ICC in OG Wrath.
