Unfortunately some things, classic can't replicate

This isn’t a hate on classic post, more of a “remember this?” post.

One thing classic will unfortunately be unable to replicate, is the amazing feeling of discovery vanilla had. The feeling of having absolutely no idea what was in store for you out in the world. Entering a new zone not knowing whether you’re supposed to be there yet or not, Wandering the world in search of a new area to quest.

I remember a friend of mine and i were leveling our first characters in the Badlands and we were both getting kind of tired of the badlands’ aesthetic so we decided to wander the world in search of a new place to quest. eventually we wound up in tanaris, and were amazed at just how big the area was, and that it happened to be level appropriate for us. That experience has always stuck with me to this day.

I know classic will never be able to replicate this, as everyone has access to a vast arrray of knowledge concerning the world, and that saddens me, But i will at least be able to look forward to actually being competant at playing my class and the game in general.

Just wanted to share a bit of nostalgia with you all while we sit here teetering on the edge of our seats over classic telling ourselves “i definitely don’t need it…”

again…to clarify, this post isn’t trashing classic, Just reminiscing about the past, something we’re all trying to recapture with classic’s release.

Classic isn’t trying to replicate “old memories” per say it’s trying to relive the time period and for those who are new to it, it’ll be a big shock to the system.

Why was this post needed?

I can understand your point. It’s like the first time you watch your race introduction video, and you spawn in this truly 3d, stunning world. Now it’s like, “Oh, it’s Northshire, I need to get out of here quick.”

There’s a certain level of wonder that can never be recaptured. I logged into the UO beta back in 1997 and the idea of being in this fantasy world with other players was such a foreign concept. I was mind blown. Never going to feel that again…

Looking forward to Classic though. It may not be new, but it’ll still be fun…

Does there NEED to be a reason to post something? Would you rather i heaped another “ASMONGOLD IS RUINING WOW” or “NO LAYERING OR I LEAVE” post?

He never said it was trying to. Just that we’ve already leveled through Barrens, got lost in BRD, killed Ragnaros, etc so that discovery element is gone and he wanted other peoples thoughts on this.

Who peed in your cheerios?

That would be me… my bad… I tried to hold it!

Not necessarily. You’d be surprised the sheer number of people, even classic vets, who’ve played retail for so long they’ve actually forgotten a lot about the pre-cata world. It’s not the exact same experience, but you still get that discovery feeling, it’s simply a different kind of discovery feeling. A Rediscovery, if you will.

Unless you’re a PS player, you generally remember parts of your favorite zones or quests, but it’s very easy for memories to get overwritten or corrupted via new and conflicting information.

There’s so much stuff that happened in 2.0.1 that people simple assume was always that way in classic, despite having played through it and none of that stuff occurring except for a month or so prior to TBC’s launch. Even people i KNOW have played during earlier patches since they started the same time I did, forget stuff vanilla had.

There’s also a lot of zones people simply didn’t go to because they were less efficient, or they didn’t Thottbot and instead just grinded to get their levels rather than quest and didn’t want to have to figure out where to go or where the quests were. (and in all fairness to thottbot there are some quests so well hidden and hard to find, even if you did go there, it’s a miracle anyone found them at all).

Exactly. everytime i hear the music in durotar or the barrens i get taken way back. When i hear the music in WSG i remember the pvp jitters i got before every BG. It’s still going to have a huge impact on me for sure.

BAD DRUID BAD! Naughty!

I don’t know I wasn’t trying to come across as aggressive or anything. Apologies if it did.

You know us Druids. We shapeshift and think we can just go anywhere…

Sorry!

Who says everyone thay will be playing classsic will just be players who have played vanilla?

I understand your point but for me that “wow factor” (no pun intended) is still there just hard to get to.

I for one loved downing a boss and getting to lay eyes on the next raid encounter and challenge ahead. That being said I only got up to princess in AQ 40 and never down her…

My goal is to eventually down Princess and continue the content, at that point I’m 110% sure I’ll be beyond giddy with excitement.

Oh absolutely. I cannot wait even for my first RFC run. the excitement is killing me.

Most certainly will be different this time round, but I think that it will also be a ton of fun too!

Nonsense.

ANYBODY who has not played WoW before, and tries it out, will have that experience.

Don’t even know why people knock nostalgia in the first place. Nostalgia by definition is something that recalls happiness. It’s good to be happy.

I’m with you OP, simply looking forward to visiting an old favorite, and nothing wrong with that.

Exactly. I started playing in WOTLK. While some things in Classic will be familiar, much more will be new to me. I can’t wait!

I’m going to be happy to finally be back in the correct world again, before the short sighted former developers trashed it with cataclysm.

I have not played on pirate servers so it will not be discovery for me, but it will certainly be rediscovery.

My never-played-WoW-before friends will get to experience the discovery, and I get to leech that vicariously like the sad neckbeard I am.

For me personally it’s been so long since I’ve seen this iteration of the world and there is so much I don’t remember. It might not be entirely new, but all I know is that when I leveled to 10 during the stress test I felt exactly the same as when I did it 14 years ago.
