They spawn around where you are standing, in pre-set locations. They can’t spawn on top of the burning corpses of previous waves though, so they’ll be scattered if you have bad positioning.
That was not my experience at all. I managed to kill him, but the adds absolutely appeared in random spots some times, they were not always near me. Including being all the way over on the far end of the arena from where I was.
They spawn near you, preferring to spawn in a straight line, however there’s a number of things that will screw their line up and that’s probably what you’re running into.
- They can’t really wrap around corners so if their line would go around one of the arena corners, some of them will spawn on the opposite wall instead.
- They can’t spawn where the corpse of an old add is. If their line would go through a corpse, they’ll start skipping positions and the spawn locations become erratic.
- While it’s less consistent, the entrance can sometimes mess up their line.
I advise taking the boss to each of the 4 corners for each spawn and moving him around in a circle as you clean up adds. Your time window is quite tight here so be careful.
I’d also add that it’s generally best not to hug the arena walls. More so for the bombs than for the adds but if you have a bit of space it’s easier to be in a good spot where you’re not getting them to wrap around a corner.
I just cleared this as an arcane mage 662 ilvl. The tip to bind an interact key to kick the bombs easier is huge in winning this fight. I bound mine to middle mouse button. This way I can click the button and the bomb will go wherever I am facing. It made the fight somewhat less chaotic.
You want to keep the boss near the wall of the arena. Fight with him with your back to the wall to get him close. The adds will spawn FOCUS KICKING BALLS AT THEM as quickly as possible. This takes a little practice to get used to but once you are able to clear the adds quickly with bombs you will be on the right track of winning.
Kick the bombs to clear adds and immediately move along the wall away from the dead adds. You will want to save some sort of cd if necessary to break his shield. You can take drums if you don’t have a hero button and that will reset every try for you to have. Even take battle potion can help you break shields.
But when you move him you get your back to the wall again and get him close in. Control mob spawns like this.
Having big dps is helpful but only a little. This fight is more about positioning to make clearing the adds as quickly as possible and then chipping boss down slowly.
I used healer brann, curios didn’t matter too much.
And don’t forget to eat Brann’s free gouda! It stacks with conventional food buffs too so you can do both. (I used the Intercontinental Takeout just for the sake of saving some money.)
These are the same arguments we had back in season 1.
The sweaty boys that kill him early in the season will swear up and down that the fight has zero issue and it’s 100% killable, and nothing you say will change their minds on it.
I got Zek double ? last season and I already killed Underpin one ? in 2 pulls this season.
I can tell you that double ?? has problems that need to be addressed by the dev. team. Just like Zek did. Zek was badly designed for many reasons, despite being very doable with practice and strategy and this is no different.
IMO: I would expect in the coming weeks at least:
-
Adds reduced health 10%. I think they are too bulky and given they are 5 they should be dying with 2 bombs instead of three to give you a breathing room.
-
Gear DOES matter for the average player, because pumping through the shield is a hard dps check. If you can’t clear the shield, no amount of perfect movement will help you finish the fight, this is the same dps check that was in Zek with the egg. You need to change your talents to specifically have small but powerful burst windows.
-
I genuinely don’t see why Underpin has to melee like a truck. I think his melee is way too strong given all the other things happening, this isn’t like Zek where his melee was important to make you push phase 2 as quickly as you could, and Underpin never stops meleeing you. Once again, just like in Season 1… it’s bad design to have him crit on melee. That is super unnecessary.
Those are minor adjustments that would dramatically improve the fight without lifting too much the difficulty or strategy of it.
My Fury 653 is currently around 40%-45% on double ? and I still don’t have a 4-piece set (not that it matters much cause its garbage but still), so I’m sure at around 658 it will be much more manageable.
Congrats to the pros that already took him down, but try not to be overly condescending about the average players struggles. They are real. And blizzard has done a mediocre job with these nemesis so far.
The Sharif don’t like it.
I just find it amusing that tanks can trivialize the mechanic of the fight.
He thinks it’s not kosher.
*Tankin’ the Casbah?
You need 3 bombs to kill all 5 adds, and the game drops two sets of 5 between each add wave. You already get a lot of breathing room.
It’s effectively the only source of unavoidable damage, and the avoidable damage is just going to kill you. If his melee wasn’t threatening, you’d run double dps and trivialize his shield. As it stands, it’s set up so tank wants to run dps brann, dps want to run healer, and healer wants either dps or tank. The critting aspect I could go either way on.
The hardest achievement available each season for delves is intended to be hard.
Nobody is being condescending? People just offer tips.
Just the ?

Oh sorry, I didn’t mean that anyone was on this thread. Just that that was the prevailing theme last season on all the threads about Zek’s difficulty.
I’m sick in bed rn trying to feel good to do raid later I hope. Norovirus made its way through the whole family and thankfully got me last so I could take care of them.
Ooh got you. That did happen a bit. It took many many many tries to get zek down for me so I always was in agreement that it was tough to do. Lol
Feel better soon! I’m checking which delve stories are available and I’m turning my nose up at E9 and Waterworks so far. Lol
I’m picky when I don’t really need to do them except for the journey points.
Yeah, not having much luck so far. Practice helps as I’m getting farther and farther into the fight, but not anywhere near getting him yet.
Bombs feel inconsistent. Sometimes they travel a good way and take out more than half the line up, sometimes they get hang up right in front of the adds. No idea why, but the one that really gets my goat is the flamethrower. Edges really need to be defined better. Same as Zek’s cone, I think I’m clear, then I’m dead. Easily more than half my wipes.
Interestingly enough, double DPS (ret pally with DPS Brann) were my best attempts. I tried leaving some of the more difficult to hit adds up and focusing the boss. Couldn’t survive adds’ fire damage as things slowly spun out of control. Back to prot :).
This simply isn’t true. While they might tend to prefer an area near you, it is common for one or more to spawn on the opposite side of the arena.
Frankly, I think I’m just tired of dance fights at this point. No matter your content form of choice, there comes a time where fights that demand constant, precise movements simply begin to to weigh on you. And no, I’m not saying to bring back tank and spanks. I Just don’t think every fight needs to be a fustercluck of overlapping one-shot mechanics, adds, and poorly implemented interaction requirements.
Really, there are other ways to impose skill requirements. It’s starting to not even feel like an MMO anymore.
Bruh I have 97 pulls on the man and in every single one of them the add spawns followed the exact same rules. To say nothing of all the other players with the exact same experience. I find it much more likely that you simply don’t understand how the spawns work than that I got the exact same RNG 97 times in a row.
It’s not random. Your choices are to either understand how it works and learn how to manipulate it, or just continue to curse your ill luck and make no progress. I can’t help you any more than that.
