I’ve done this encounter a few times now and for what its worth thought I would drop this here on the off chance it may nudge future encounter design.
Overall, this fight is great. There’s a bunch of stuff to manage so it always feels on the edge of devolving into chaos but if you time things correctly you can keep on top of it… except for a couple of things.
Bombs: Kicking the bombs into the adds’ faces is super satisfying and adds a lot of interest. However having the boss follow me around and park his capacious posterior on top of them while I’m trying to click it is about as fun as trying to find a quest NPC under 73 mounted players circa 2008. This turns one of the best parts of the encounter into a frustrating annoyance. If object interactions like this continue to be central to some encounters there needs to be a better solution than making ultra-fine cursor placement underneath a massive hit box part of the game play. It is not fun.
Also, if you don’t want warlock or hunter pets to be able to tank Delve bosses can you please come up with a some encounter mechanics that actually compliment ranged classes? Having the boss one-shot pets is such an obvious and clunky copout that it makes you feel like you’re being punished for having the audacity to play a pet class. Especially when there are so many examples of other ways solo encounters can challenge players this feels targeted and insulting. I’m sure that is not what is intended but it’s what I came away with. Really hope this can be improved on in the future.
Interact button is the best we have now, but its miles ahead of manually clicking them like we had to in BFA (motherlode 1st boss, where this mechanics was ctrl c ved from).
What boss does this happen on for you as I can’t really say this has happened to me.
I know there’s a boss in Underkeep who kills your G:FG if you cast it too soon.
The main cause of my Felguard deaths are Explosive Assistants who tend to overwhelm him.
They’re referring to Underpin, the boss mentioned in the title of the post. The same thing is happening to me, and the same thing happened with Zekvir. My pets do not often get one-shot outside of these instances.
With the Underpin, the trick is to turn off your Pet’s taunt. That way, he’ll live longer and continue to do damage.
The problem with the Underpin is you have to stop attacking him directly for large parts of the fight to focus on kicking bombs at his summons. For ? version, they could have made it so you only need to kick one bomb at them.
Yes, I am aware that Growl should be off. It is. I have even tried setting them to Passive. I’ve changed up my rotation so I don’t start with Barbed Shot so that I get aggro first before my pets do. Same issue with Zekvir. I’ve mained a hunter since Shadowlands, and these two fights are the only two I recall that consistently have this issue.
with the current button bloat most classes have, adding another interact mechanic was the worst dev design decision i’ve seen in a long time from blizz.
