I have completed the legion fishing achievement Fisherfriend of the Isles. I have received the Underlight Emerald item by email and I used it. It succesfully unlocked the artifact appearance tab into the Pearl Interface.
However when I select another color the artifact does not change and the Underlight Angler become invisible. By removing the Fishing for Attention buff, the artifact came bacl with the default appearance. If I leave the pearl interface and come back to the appearance one , the color selected is the one I chose.
I did a full reset of the interface by renaming Cache, Interface and WTF folder with :
retail\Cache_old
retail \Interface_old
retail\WTF_old
and the same problem still remains.
I also tried to change the appearance with the commands:
/run C_ArtifactUI.SetAppearance(988)
and
/run C_ArtifactUI.SetAppearance(989).
The same bug comes from the color changes in the interface but the artifact become invisible.

I have the exact same issue, I also reset my ui doing the steps listed in https://blizzard.com/support/en/article/Resetting-the-WoW-User-Interface. I tried the commands (same result as op) and the pole does in fact go invisible when you try to use the Luminous Pearl in Dalaran to change the color.

The issue with the artifact disappearing is true for all Legion artifacts. I’ve always had success using /reload to get it to reappear. The issue with being unable to change the appearance of the fishing pole seems to be its own issue. They’ve both been present since pre-patch and reported several times.
I reported them in game as well. I would love to see it fixed.
Same problem here. I have two colors unlocked and applying either of them renders my pole invisible. If I click off the ‘fishing gear visible buff’, Fishing for Attention, the next time I cast the pole is back in the default color.
I am also having the same issue as OP. I just used the Underlight Emerald and unlocked the appearances tab. I can choose a different appearance, but my Underlight Angler becomes invisible. This is without addons activated.
I was SO excited to get this achievement and this sucked the joy out so quickly.
This still hasn’t been patched as of December 2023. I started a ticket with Blizzard and they told me to reset UI (which I did and it still doesnt work). I tried with no addons as well on a fresh install of WoW. When I tried the macros as listed above, it made the arms flop on the murloc skelton on the Underlight Angler, but the color never changed. :{
What I tried: I did a lot of tinkering with some guildies who also have the achievement. One guildie had the achievement from back in legion, so he currently has the blue-spooled Angler. He tried to switch at the Dalaran Pearl, but apparently can no longer switch colors. Something about the profession tab replacing the ability to truly mainhand equip the the Underlight Angler is part of the issue.
Possible solution Blizz Could Take: There isn’t an option in the Transmogrifier or Barber shop, but if there was one added for the profession appearances, I feel like that could remedy the issue.

Still bugged as of 4/4/2025, TWW patch 11.1. Changing appearances at the Underlight Pearl in Legion Dalaran does not stick. Apparently it’s due to the Profession Tool changes in Dragonflight. People on EU realms have the same bug, as there are numerous forum bug reports on their forums as well.
