What are they? Where do they come from? I was flying through Northrend the other day and the sheer size of the gem at the top of the Ziggarut (or Spirit tower; WC3) is amazing. Couldn’t find anything on what they are or how they get there.
Supposedly taken from the nerubains. 
…although I don’t see any crystals in the new untouched zone.
Maybe they use elemental magic to combine them from a great number of smaller gems?
Or actually, maybe they’re crystals created through magical means, like giant soulstones or something.
From what I remember the Gems resemble the Maldracite of Maldraxxus.

I always assumed they were the anchors keeping the buildings summoned. Remember, in WC3 the Scourge units summoned their buildings from elsewhere (from Azjol-Nerub, presumably) instead of building them on-location.
