I was originally going to title this thread “what oils your gears” but decided against it.
What are some uncommon touches that you appreciate seeing in RP?
Are there any concepts or tropes that you really love but feel like you don’t see nearly enough of?
The concept of a “thieves’ guild” is such a classic fantasy trope that I’m surprised I’ve never seen one on WrA. Oh, sure, we’ve had plenty of crime families over the years, but a thieves’ guild is an entirely different concept!
I’d love to see a crime guild that’s less about drugs and protection rackets and more about heists and “second-story work”, with a roster of pickpockets, fences, and safecrackers. Maybe throw in some smuggling, too. Or graverobbing. You know, for variety!
I love seeing gnome characters honestly, but I really love serious gnomes.
I have a soft spot for gnomes and was gonna RP one, but never got around to finishing the character. A shame, because I honestly think if I ever got over my love for the Kaldorei, I think gnomes would be my second-favorite race to explore.
i love sapient weapons. it’s an awesome way to have a secondary character that can be a good foil to the main character. they can be lighthearted, evil, power hungry, whatever you want. my last two Death Knights each had a sapient weapon at some point and it was great for them to interact. i highly support sapient weapons - imbue your sword with sentience today.
I’ve always been a bit of a fan of Moonclaw Worgen, despite never playing one myself. They’re only really around in Feathermoon Stronghold in game, but I kinda like the idea of worgen assimilating to the Kaldorei way of life. I’ve seen a handful of RPers play them and I think it’s a neat concept.
the way I’ve understood the sentient / sapience difference is sentience is autonomy and self awareness whereas sapience is complex reasoning and critical thinking. so that’s what i meant.
I really, really appreciate when people go out of their way to get toys and appearances to play a non-player race. I’ve seen Arrakoa, and Sethrak, and Dryads, Tuskarr, and hot damn the effort that goes into that. Keeping up prisms and finding unique ways to get those appearances in the first place, heck said Dryad character had a second toon just for using the prisms on, and I applaud that dedication to immersion.
A sentient weapon would be able to perceive and (to some extent) react to the world around it, but it would not necessarily be self-aware.
A sapient weapon would be self-aware, and would be able to reason and learn.
Both are interesting concepts, but I agree with Otielle that it would be cool to see more sapient weapons because those are the sorts that you’d actually be able to have a conversation with.
On the topic of talking weapons…as long as they aren’t too talky. Give me weapons like Gurthang that only spoke up when it was artful, not swords that are like a portable Alexa.
Sapient weapons is a cool idea! Juspion has trinkets and tools that have some automation to them but aren’t self aware, maybe one day they will rise up and become the Artificer!
I mentioned in another thread that I have some Shaman who have notably religious relationships with the Elements. I’d like to see more people do that; mostly just out of curiosity of how others might handle the idea.
Hi, would you like to hear about my headcanon the Lifewalkers? They’re a sect of Voldunai shamans and priests who worship the spirits to purify water for drinking. They deliver the water across the desert, act as medics, and also perform burial rites.
They have salt water stills to purify ocean water and call them “shrines”. The shrines are based at temples which also have altars for worshiping what few water elementals make Vol’dun their home.
Why aren’t there any guilds posing as travel agencies or adventure expeditions in WoW? Why isn’t anyone selling IC ‘excursions’ around the world of Azeroth? So many people say they love walk-up RP? Sell it to them!
I mean, I’ve thought of doing this a number of times over the years. I’m not that creative, so I can’t be the only one who’s thought of it?
Make a forum post. List your ‘travel brochure’ and adventures available.
Various gold prices buy you…
A set-of ‘zone appropriate transmog gear’ (cool adventuring hat inc), maybe some grey weapons, a fishing pole, random related grey junk, etc…
Conversations, campfire stories and lore-specific knowledge about the zone.
Maybe…A 2 day excursion with a mountaineer and a Grummle-sherpa to the top of Mount Neverest!
Maybe…A fishing guide to take you fishing in the tropics of Sholazar basin!
Maybe…A trek across the deserts of Uldum!
So many options and places to go in-game. I’m not sure why I’ve never seen this.
my current character, yargachin, has a sapient weapon. her name is stabitha. she is fully self-aware, can reason, learn, and create new ideas. i also play up the fact she’s a sword made by the scourge. she has, depending on your view, a neutral evil viewpoint or a blue and orange set of morality.
she’s a sword so she’s loyal to her owner. she doesn’t really understand the sanctity of life (living are gross, after all). she is fiercely loyal and protective, genuinely wants the best for her master, but also exclusively wants to engage in violence. she is a sword, after all. she was made for one purpose, is aware that that’s her one purpose, and fully embraces it. to her, it’s most important to find serve her master, then to find the next stabbing opportunity. the rest of existence beyond that is just ephemeral.
I like civilian characters, not I’m a dirt farmer and magic isn’t real but I’m a dirt famer AND I USE MAGIC TO FARM!!!
Basically cool stuff like this!
I really love this idea! I’m leveling a Vulpera shaman on and off for that heritage set and was pondering what a Vulpera Shaman would do in the desert. This is a super cool idea! If I stick to the character for RP I might try to work out a similar concept so making sure to note this for later.
Otherwise, I like every day people but people that fit in the outrageous Warcraft universe. You could have a character that might not be able to summon a tornado that can destroy a village but you could conjure a breeze to power a well turbine or run a business outta Durotar freezing water to make ice that goblins buy from you wholesale which then resell to the various establishments around Orgrimmar because someone always needs ice in their drink.
