Unavoidable deaths in caves

This is the second time I’ve had this happen but when being in a cave I’ve just been doing my own thing when suddenly BOOM half the cave jumps me! It’s like one of the mobs from a higher layer gets aggro’d for no apparent reason and pulls a ton of mobs with it.

This happened in the Dun Moroh cave and the one for the final parts of King’s Land in Southern Loch Modan. Maybe it’s a Trogg thing?

Updates, since no one reads apparently:

  1. I did have friends in the cave with me.
  2. We all understand that going into caves are dangerous
  3. The answer is: A Fleeing mob runs then aggros monsters on a higher floor and that mob pulls other mobs along their path to you.

Have you tried not going in caves?

It’s more of a skill thing.

Yes, however, I was in a group with a mage when half the cave pulled. We both made it out alive but it’s weird that it’s happened twice.

Caves = Graves

Caves have always had the risk that there’s no safe way to disengage without pulling extra mobs, and fleeing mobs easily pull extra adds. Hyperspawns exacerbate that threat.

If you have to go spelunking, always consider that at any given moment everything you have killed could hyperspawn and you could suddenly find yourelf pulling 2-3 mobs. If you couldn’t survive that, reconsider your need to be in that cave.

While hyperspawns might have SOMETHING to do with it… I’m not talking about that or generally killing multiple mobs in a row - that I can deal with. I’m talking about a mob aggroing and bringing 5+ others with it from an upper level.

Sorry, misunderstood. This is pretty consistent behaviour with leashing, I believe.

When you aggro a mob, it sends out a ‘cry for help’ to all nearby mobs. Any mob within that cry will share the aggro and come attack you. In addition, if any of those aggro’d mobs path through another enemy mob en-route to attack you then they’ll pick up aggro, too.

So if that ‘cry for help’ is triggering mobs on a seperate level, they’ll beeline towards you and make a train of every other mob they pass on the way. You just won’t usually see this behaviour in the open world.

Again, caves = graves.

Being in the cave in the first place is the avoidable part. I don’t go in them unless I’m overleveled.

Nothing I have seen since layering was created has made me believe your story about mobs suddenly appearing from another layer. It was probably a hyper spawn. You say that it wasn’t but the way you describe it I am not sure you understand what hyper spawning is. When a hyper spawn area runs out of mobs it will immediately spawn a new mob… OR… multiple new mobs. There is some randomness to it.

I know you are going to say this isn’t what happened, but without a video you will never convince me that it isn’t. As for your deaths being unavoidable, fight in a spot that has no spawns from your or any other layer. One other alternative is to stay out of caves as others have said.

the thought of 20+ troggs beating on you deep inside a cave makes me happy :expressionless:

I’m very familiar with Dynamic Spawns and Hyperspawning. P-servers have been using similar things for ages.

That does seem like it’s the answer as Troggs have a tendency to “run” at lower HP. That would probably explain it, tbh.

Lol!

This says it all.

I’ve never had any mobs inappropriately aggro. The struggle is only making sure hyperspawns or pats don’t get you.

I try to avoid caves, but I’m a rogue with vanish now so I play more cocky than I should at times.

Edit: the point about cries for help is a good point too. I did the raptor quest in wetlands and forgot the screechers (fancy that) called for help at low health. Suddenly 4 mobs on me. Thanks vanish.

If they run they have to walk into another friendly. It’s also possible that they aggro someone on a ledge and they path a long way to you which picks up more friends along the way.

The first rule of Hardcore is never go into caves.

That’s not quite how it works.

The fact that you did not learn from the first time you should not gone into a cave…

Lesson 1 from any HC game… DO NOT GO INTO CAVES.

Ah, thanks for correcting and providing that resource.

thats not unavoidable. you can…

  1. bring friends.
  2. not be in the cave.
  3. ask for help.

The unavoidable part was having a mob from a floor above being pulled by a fleeing monster on a lower floor and then having tons of other monsters come along for the ride.

Why do I keep having to justify this?

you could’ve ran away.
