Unable to progress past 48% on The "Great" Detective quest

I am stuck at 48% completion on The “Great” Detective quest. I followed the Wowhead guide and headed to the beach at 48%, where I can see the dirt pile that should contain Herrkrop’s body. But when I use my Torch of Pyrreth, it does not reveal the body. This prevents me from progressing on the quest. At the same time, I am receiving a message “You have no target” over and over endlessly as long as I am in the zone. These issues persist through UI reloads, disabling all addons, logging out and back in, running a scan and repair of my game files, relaunching the game, and abandoning the quest and starting over. Please help!

There are multiple dirt piles that scattered along the beach. I found the ‘Body’ after approaching several piles along the beach and it ended up being under the one beside the guy on a crate . . . I believe his name was Scrapes.

From what I’m seeing on Wowhead, and from other players in the area, that pile should always have the body. I ran around to several of the other piles multiple times and my torch works on them to reveal either a crab or a piece of trash.

I was having the same problem. I was able to complete it just now by abandoning and retaking the quest. You have to go talk to Julia Henning, Nat Pagle, and Scrapes after the detective arrives. You will not get % for talking to them before he arrives. Talking to them after will get you to 96%. The last 4% is from talking to the detective again.

I tried abandoning the quest and starting over as well, but it did not work for me. My torch isn’t interacting with the dirt pile to reveal the body, so the detective never shows up and I can’t progress.

I’m having the exact same issue. Have you been able to get it yet?

I was actually able to fix this. I noticed I’d get the “You have not target” message whenever in Tanaris, but it remained when I flew to Thousand Needles. If I hearthed or took the portal to Org, the message would go away. So I flew from Org to Tanaris and didn’t get the message at all. Sure enough, when I used the torch on the pile, it worked.

edit: My original error was before the locked box in tanaris resulting in stuck progress

I logged off and played another game for a few hours. I just hopped back on the character that was bugged and its no longer having this error.

If I get the error again, I’ll come back and mention it, else it may have been server hotfixed.

so far so good, I got passed where I got the bug and was stuck earlier

Went into a dungeon que on a later part, the error has returned upon exiting and loading back into Tanaris

Finished the quest, ignored the error, qued up for a timewalking dungeon, error gone on return again…

I was finally able to continue, but I’m not really sure what caused the change. When I logged in the next day and went to Tanaris (via the Caverns of Time portal in Stormwind, the same way I got there every other time), I noticed I was no longer receiving the “no target” error. So I went over to the dirt pile and used my torch, and it worked correctly that time.

Still not working, it is unbelievable that this bug exists for over a week and not a single blue has responded.

I am having the same problem. Get to 48% and go to find the body. but the torch does not make the san piles clickable.

Me too. This is very annoying.

Edit I am an idiot and forgot to use the Idol to find locations and the torch to activate the sand.

I was now able to finish the quest, but it was quite difficult to figure out.

I had to equip the torch as well and I had to open up all the potential graves first, before I found the body. So either the bug was fixed or it was a poorly written quest text.

Either way, I am close to 100 bronze now, only took me like 5 weeks or so.

Okay, i was getting the no target spam error. Tried all the options here with no success. What finally seemed to remove it was abandoning the quest and then joining a kazzak/sha/archavon raid that phased me.

Once i left the raid group, the spam was gone and I was able to re-pick-up and do the quest.

good luck folks.
