I have 11 characters on the Sisters of Elune realm, and 1 - 3 characters on others. When I try to change realm to play one of the other characters, it always goes to Sisters of Elune.
In retail all your characters should be on the one screen, so switching realms should be irrelevant. The realm will set to the last character logged in as far as I know. Try switching realms, then creating a new character.
