So, I had some connectivity problems earlier today, and I finally got it all sorted out, but I rand into something really weird in my findings. I ran a Looking Glass diagnostic to Norgannon (NA) and found this IP address (137.221.83.82) that was giving me a 261ms hop.

Looking up the IP address’ physical location, it says it’s coming from the Netherlands?? Posted below is the LG diagnostic and the geolocation of said address:

Can anyone explain what’s going on here?

The location of where an IP address has been registered does not have to match its physical location in the world. In some cases yes it does match, but it’s not required.

So you may see some Blizzard IP addresses show up as registered to the Netherlands, but no that’s not where that router is physically located. :slight_smile:

That particular device is configured to delay or give less priority to ICMP packets that connection tests use which is why it’s pinging higher. If that latency was due to an actual problem then the latency would be that high or higher for the remainder of the “hops” in that test.

Thank you. I have a slight grasp on my home network, but anything beyond that, like datacenter, I’m clueless about. Hopefully after this semester in college I’ll learn more. Nothing like learning this stuff at 41 years old.
