I have taken a few of my leveling alts through the prepatch event. The rate of experience gain is pretty nice, but I have an issue with the Recruit’s Gear. It does not scale to the level of my characters, and- since it is not a guaranteed drop- this causes my characters that aren’t using heirlooms to suffer. I leveled a warlock from 29-34 through two rounds of Radiant Echoes, including several of the mini events. I received three pieces of Recruit’s Gear, and they were item level 32, 37, and 38. Is this expected? It certainly doesn’t feel good when my overall item level is around 130 to see an item level 30-something item drop. I hope this can be fixed for people who are leveling alts through the event.
It doesn’t scale, which is whatever, the main issue is that it barely drops. Over 6 boss kills and 2 dozen mini boss kills and not a single item. I’ve gone from 10-30 on a character getting 4 items total.
Gear scale isn’t a problem because you can level quickly to 70; and use heirlooms which do scale. The scale of the gear is better in the 50-60s. i.e. 69 drops 450 ilvl 68 drops 437 and 67 drops 420.
It’s really really bad. I’m getting ilvl50 gear for my level 28 hero. AH gear for lvl 27 is 130ilvl. So I have to go to Org every 5 levels (30 minutes) to upgrade the non-heirloom slots so I don’t get killed by random (non-event) mobs in the zone. It doesn’t help that green gear in AH is overpriced like crazy from level 40-60 specifically because of this event.
I’d read a few comments saying that if you set your character on the current expansion for Chromie Time (rather than one of the old ones) your gear will scale - and this is incorrect. Today my level 58 Warlock got a https://www.wowhead.com/item=218318/recruits-sturdy-rod which, despite what wowhead said on it, was ilevel 146. Currently the warlock has a Hellscream’s War Staff at ilevel 284. So yeah, completely useless.
I really do not understand how, on the one hand, a piece of purple gear will drop to me which I cannot use until 70, while the gear that does drop is vendor trash.
Given the state of the event at release, it’s extremely clear that it was made in the shortest possible time and with the least possible effort. There is precisely zero doubt in my mind that gearing of alts would be long on the list of afterthoughts.
The event was so bad at launch, they essentially remade it 2 days later, when even a single person playtesting for an hour would have told them as much. If they didn’t notice that, they sure as hell didn’t playtest leveling a character in it.
Yes, barely drops, doesn’t scale right til level 55, as far as I could tell.
