Hello, I was curious for all your tank mains, where do you go to learn or who do you watch to learn the routes for new dungeons and raids? I want to tank main for this coming expansion. But I have this huge anxiety of not knowing the best way to go/correct routes. Any tips or suggestions?
most of the original common tanking info sites have stopped being maintained over the years.
Icy Veins has a bunch of stuff dedicated to tanking
Have a read through some of the guides, set up your spec, and go try a few follower dungeons.
You can learn rotations and get familiar with the layouts without accidentally getting people killed
My best advice would be to try and find a guild and then see if you can join some M+ keys with people from that guild. From there you can either find an existing tank who can help you understand the routes, or you’ll find 4 other players who are willing to all learn and build together. Once you’re over the social hurdle of finding a stable team of players, the path to being an M+ Leader is much easier.
If you insist on using Dungeon Finder and going for the solo experience: I would say join a lot of a keys as a DPS first (and ideally record VODs your runs).
There are a few really powerful 3rd-party tools to help understand and plan routes. There’s the Keystone Guru website for external; and there’s the Mythic Dungeon Tool (/mdt) addon in game. (there are others, but these are the two I tend to us). You can watch your VODs, or find an M+ VOD on YT or Twitch. Try and find “normal” keys in the +10 range, DON’T use competition videos from Mythic Dungeon Invitation or The Great Push. They are fun to watch, but the competition routes are nothing like “live” routes done by us civilian gamers.
Follow the video with one of these routing tools open and actually try to track the route yourself. What order do they pull in? What pulls are combined? Are there any mobs skipped? Where are they Lusting? Make your notes right on the mapping tool. Then do it again with a different video in the same dungeon. After doing this a bit, you’ll get a good idea of the routes people take, and what options there are.
i have tanked before but only through older stuff. my question is primarily aimed at NEW content coming with TWW. i have spent HOURS searching and have only found one singular video of new dungeon from TWW and it was made like a month ago… is there some sort of NDA about dungeon and raid content for tww?
I appreciate that you are anxious to be prepared, but as you say, I don’t see much specific material for you to prepare on yet. I do see more videos of dungeons than you report, especially if you search by specific name, but I wouldn’t place a great deal of reliance on anything as granular as routes.
This is not terribly surprising.
No players are confident in the classes and dungeons remaining constant from this Beta phase, even this close.
Also, consensus routes are typically worked out during the first couple of weeks of a new expansion, and then refined and changed again as M+ opens up. AFAIR, Mythic Dungeon Tools, the addon most used to share routes, does tend to be updated A LOT in the first few weeks of M+, as people try and get experince with the dungeons.
Remember that you will have a couple of weeks to learn the dungeons practically on Normal and Heroic - and even Follower - modes once the expansion starts, and before things get difficult or serious. And by then, I’m sure there will be lots more vids out.
i havent played beta simply because i dont want to replay the content and get burnout before its even released. i will definitely check out those addons and watch some videos on them. but as everyones been saying its best to just run with the guild and learn together. i just want to be prepared as a tank for when im stuck doing PUGs if my guildies arent on. dont want to get kicked for being too slow or something dumb
