I am planning on tanking in classic but I also want to try out some of the two-handers they had back in the day. Because of this I was wondering If I could integrate some two handers into my gear sets for tanking. I was also planning on maxing out all of my weapon skills for warrior so I would have to pick up some two-handers at some point anyways. Basically Is it possible to spec into a two-hander while using a shield in classic?
Also on a side note, was weapon swapping mid combat a thing back in the day?
Yes you can weapon swap in combat and the action isn’t on the GCD. I don’t think it would be feasible to efficiently tank maximum level content without a shield. You might be able to tank lower level dungeons with a 2 handed weapon though.

Warriors easily specced arms and used a 2 handset for questing, farming, etc then equipped a 1 hander + shield for tanking. The could not use a 2 hander and shield at the same time. Not even if it was a spear and their name was Leonidas.

there was no titan’s grip in vanilla, or in TBC either
so you cannot use a two-handed weapon in one hand with something else in the other hand
its quite very possible to get 5/5 2h spec and 31 point into prot with the same build, though, but don’t expect to do better in PvP with a 2h than with a 1h with that build; shield slam actually does damage, and the nearly 30% damage boost from using a two-hander isn’t worth losing shield slam and the extra armor and shield block

Thanks for your reply. I wasn’t sure if you could or not. All I knew was that you could equip a two-hander with a shield in retail, but I didn’t know if it could be done in classic.

A shield is an offhand item and 2H weapons require both hands to use. That being said. You CAN tank while using a 2H weaponn in vanilla up to SM. There are certain 2H weapons that give you armor. They’re quite rare but the extra armor makes it easier for healers to heal you. Good luck fellow warrior
