I just earned the mount, playing solo on a fire mage. And it took way, way too long to get here.
I got every layer on the first try. Nearly all deaths until the seventh layer were due to falling off chains. (Pro tip: Alter Time can save you if you are falling off chains.)
Most runs took two hours, just to be so powerful by the end that I could nearly one-shot bosses because I lucked out with upgrades. Hardly any learning or progression took place, unless you count learning the pro tip about using alter time on chains. My honest question to Blizzard: why did you make me grind all these easier layers? It seemed like such a waste of time until layer 7.
Then my last layer took four hours. I had enough health and shield upgrades to truly deserve the title āmage tankā yet floor 17 creatures could two-shot me. But with fewer of the overpowered dps uprades, I have to admit it was actually kind of a challenge and I felt lucky to end up with a boss I could trivialize.
I liked horrific visions (I know that must put me in the minority), and I also like Torghast for having the chance to prove myself in harder and harder challenges. But at a certain point, it feels like Blizzard confused āharderā with ālongerā.
My biggest foe on layer 8 floor 17 wasnāt actually the mobs that could two-shot me: it was my own fingers and brain. I was tired. Honestly, just tired from playing for too long. Tired is not fun; hence the title of this post.

I think 18 floors per run is too much. Even if youāre powered to the point where you can breeze through it, I think the length exhausts the fun factor. Want it longer than standard Torghast? How about 12 floors and 12 layers. You still end up with 144 floors total but more people would probably enjoy it . 12 floors is still twice as many as the standard Torghast run.

Let me get my weekly soul ash from TC, and Iāll actually run it. I can handle doing a third wing per week, but not 5 wings (3 per TC + 2 for regular mode).

longer=harder
longer=funner
Blizzard has absolutely fallen into that trap. World Quests. Raid bosses. Torghast.

I actually donāt mind the WQs because its still bite-sized chunks of effort ā longer, but not preventing you from taking breaks.
Torghastās instance design means being afraid of afkāing out ā that just isnāt good design for something that takes 2+ hours.

I wish it were possible to pause a Torghast run - maybe only at specific floors? (Broker floors, presumably, or maybe just after each boss in Twisting Corridors.) I donāt have a problem with the time it takes per se, but having to block out all that time at once with no interruptions allowed is annoying.

Someday after covid if my wife takes a work trip or something I may be able to dedicate that many hours. Wow. And congratz.

Now that Iāve had a chance to sleep on itā¦
Suggestions to speed up layer-8 runs without changing overall difficulty:
-
When āopenerā abilities have a charging timer, such as polymorph bombs, make them trigger immediately at full strength when cast outside of combat (and only accumulate charges slowly if cast while in combat) ā just so you donāt spend 15 seconds idle between every pull.
-
Shift the ārandomā upgrades to happen closer towards the start of an 18-floor climb so you begin the ascent faster, particularly on higher difficulty layers where it can make a difference.
-
Slightly tone down a few overpowering DPS boosts, while simultaneously toning down (by a similar amount) the enemy HP scaling, so you can still quickly clear floors while waiting for these upgrades to drop.
And the following would just help Twisting Corridors in general:
-
Allow soul ash to come from TC in lieu of the other normal mode⦠not to get any extra, just in lieu of it
-
Donāt annoy me with another random āblink is 3 sec fasterā when its already 0.5 sec which I cannot do anything with because the global cooldown is still 1 sec.
-
As I once found out the hard way on the beta⦠if I get enough haste and fireball speed improvements then I just cannot hit the keystrokes fast enough to maximize dps unless I map every single button on the keyboard to āFireballā and faceroll. Not that it isnāt fun to think of my mage being the goddess of fire with a continuous stream of fire from the palms of her hand to incinerate her foes⦠but I expect that play style more in Diablo than Warcraft. It doesnāt feel right here.
It was kinda supposed to be like this by design.
Itās mind numbing.
And tedious.
And boring.
And takes forever.
I can only manage to do one layer a day. If I try and do more I end up so fed up that I run into the room, pop my CDs and hope that either they die or I do so I have an excuse to leave just because Iām bored.
Thereās no thought. Thereās no skill involved. You either get the right upgrades and one shot the final boss of whatever layer or end up crippled by bad RNG.

Itās a challenge mode designed for people with a lot of time and patience, it should be long, and hard, and uh, yeah you get the point.
A challenge mode = hard
A challenge mode =/= long
I think if you look at everything I wrote, it is very clear that I am not asking for anything to be less of a challenge mode. Indeed, since I completed 144 floors without a single failure (really only dying to falling off chains a few times), clearly I donāt feel it has to be easier.
Reason for edit: I was accused in a subsequent reply of not taking the time to read, because I used āchallengingā instead of āa challenge modeā in this post.

Itās the raid version of Torghast. You block out time for raids, they expect you to block out time for TC.
And I donāt think they ever expected anyone to do all the layers one after the other.
Oh, I didnāt do all of them in one day. Iām not that crazy. It took me more than a week to accomplish this.
But raids you can zone out and come back. Even in BC, when trash would come back after two hours, it was only the case for trash in front of bosses you hadnāt yet killed.

Never said challenging and hard and long** were the same thing, try reading next time.
You are totally correct. I must have skimmed your 27-word post too quickly; didnāt realize you said āa challenge modeā instead of āchallengingā.
I will edit my post immediately with the following substitutions:
a challenge mode = hard
a challenge mode =/= long
[ā¦] less of āa challenge modeā.
I also got confused at āfor people with a lot of time and patience, it should be longā. For a moment there, I thought you felt it was supposed to be long! Iāll try to read harder next time, I promise!

Gratz on the cheevo Dahk!
Yeah Iāve fallen off those bloody chains so many times!
I didnāt care for 5 masking Visions, I was a wreck after 30 minutes.
I donāt mind TC so much, but as a Prot Pally they built that place around this spec Iām sure, so easier for me than some.
I do find that 2+ hours of total commitment to be excessive, given the sheer lack of rewards.

Iāve been in the TCās twice, looking for clues to King Anduinās whereabouts.
The first time, I bailed on the 12-13th floor. It had been more than 5 hours, I was tired. The second time, at 8-9 floors and 4-5 hours, I got my second clue and bailed again. Then I learned I need another clue.
It may be we are overemphasizing King Anduinās importance in this situation.
Perhaps we can accomplish our goals (whatever they are, I forget why Iām here anymore) and rescue/find his Helplessness on our way home.
Or, ⦠sigh⦠I can learn to speed-runā¦
The third clue will drop from the floor-six boss on your next run. Just donāt forget to loot it!
