First few floors were normal, we could walk up to the next floor. Come Floor 3 onwards every time we defeat the floor boss and move up through the portal, it kills us just as the screen turns black. Clicking release puts up on the next floor and we lose lives the number of people that died. It makes climing the 18 floors impossible as you run out of lives buy the 7th floor.

Sounds like your mage took the power that makes time warp kill everyone after it falls off.
We did have a mage but he didnt take that power as its kinda useless in group situtation. It was the first thing i asked him when we started dying
