So i made a post about this anime recently regarding the first episode and my worries about it and… yeah, i aint good.
3 episodes so far, and im dropping it, they covered the first week in just 3 episodes, and dear god the amount of stuff they skipped, from mechanics, to character development, to emotions, etc.
I didnt felt a thing about any of the mayor events, like Rhyme’s dead, in the game this was a lot mayor and got a big reaction from the character, in the anime its pretty much glossed over like it never happened.
They even mention Neku “changing” for the better, but we didnt saw any of it, they never really touched on his character and due to how much they tone him down, he is pretty much the same from start to finish in the anime, only real difference is that he bothers to talk to others.
For those that didnt played the game, Neku was HORRIBLE in the first week, he was cold and even cruel to those around him, he saw Shiki has just a stalker and only bother to talk to her when he had no choice, this was a complain from that thread i made, Neku’s character is hugely toned down in the anime and it was a mistake.
Another scene i already mentioned which was Rhyme’s dead, the way Neku reacted to it was straight up cruel, while Shiki was clearly grieving over her dead, Neku pretty much just brushes it off, and after Shiki starts calling him out for his lack of empathy he goes on a rant about how having friends was a waste of time and worthless, and when Shiki tells him that Rhyme and her were his friends he completely shuts her off and says he is only with her to survive and nothing more.
This entire scene was removed, and has a result the impact of Rhyme’s dead, as well has Neku’s character growth later on.
Heres the scene if you wanna see it yourself (its time stamped so dont worry)
So yeah, they are rushing the hell out of the plot, and it just doesnt work, i didnt believe the friendship between Neku and Shiki cause they barely bother with it during those 3 episodes, theres no depth to the characters, you dont feel attached, etc.
They also completely removed a lot of the detective work to solve the puzzles of the missions, which showed how smart Neku can be, with some of the missions being pretty much gone entirely.
Its just sad man, TWEWY is easily one of my fav games of all time, and i was looking forward to this, but after learning about the amount of episodes, it was just a huge red flag, and they they release it, and it confirmed my worries, which was even worse.
So yeah, if you wanna get into this story, youre better off playing the game, cause even on its own, without comparing to the game, the anime is really poor.
