Turning off pet growl

Trying to stop my pet from growling. Growl is turned off in dungeon. I checked that myself every time too. However, my pet still uses it every once in a while without the skill being toggled on. Tanks just straight up left the dungeon without asking. What should I do?

I am not sure why growl is on, usually when you turn it off it does not auto cast. That said, if you have a pet that has the ability to learn Cower, that is a good thing to use to minimize aggro while in 5 mans.

I use a cat, Broken Tooth, and all I will have on auto cast is Claw and Bite. I turn off Growl and Dash to save my pets energy for the damage abilities.

Just keep a watchful eye on the pet ability bar to make sure that growl is indeed turned off and not used.

As for tanks raging and leaving, F’ them if their skins is so thin that they can handle this wee thing in their tanking experience.

At least one instance of this is caused by you leveling during the dungeon. It will turn Growl back on without the indicator on the ability. If that is part of when it’s happening for you, just turn it back on/off again and you’ll be fine.

You might be hitting growl manually by mistake. I believe by default the pet bar is set to Ctrl+#, so if you press Ctrl for anything else you may inadvertenly press growl.

Here a few thing I think are causing it.

  1. You have growl in macro you made of forgot.
  2. You hit the growl button by mistake.
  3. It a bugged and Blizzard to lazy to fix it.
  4. And finally the tank was bad at managing aggro.

I think leveling maybe the reason behind it.
I see some other players have the same problem with me. Their pet will cast growl when they leveled up in dungeon and they had to go through it’s cooldown timer before it returns to off. Same thing happened when their pets are revived too.

It’s because every single time you level up in a dungeon or raid your pet will do two things: miraculously lose health and your toggles, including growl, will be reset to its default - which is on.

You have to slot growl on your pet’s hotbar and be prepared to switch it back off everytime you ding.

Hello OP, it’s been a little while since you posted this topic but this is the macro I use on my hunters. I just press it once whenever I enter a dungeon and it ensures that Growl is off:

/petautocastoff Growl
/petautocaston [nogroup]Growl

Clicking it again when you leave a group will make sure it’s back on.

Can confirm that leveling up turns back on growl. I’ve had this happen quite a few times when leveling my lowbie hunter.
It’s fine when you remember… But most of the time, I’m focused on pushing on forward with the group and forget all about the leveling bug.
