TU106 Turing

You guys remember how the RTX 2070 was TU106? Traditionally the xx70 class cards are cut down xx80 class cards on 104 dies. But with Turing they put the RTX 2070 branding on the TU106 die which is generally meant for 60 class cards.

It was especially egregious because they increased the MSRP to $500 USD as well. Now I am not bashing Nvidia, as it turns out the RTX 3070 is GA104 just like the RTX 2070 Super was TU104.

It tells me 1 of 2 things though. Either Nvidia wanted to price the RTX 2070 at $499 MSRP so it wouldn’t look so bad when the TU104 RTX 2070 Super later launched at the increased MSRP and with performance gains in line to a typical generational leap. Or my 2nd theory, that Nvidia will eventually relegate xx70 class cards to the 106 die.

Nvidia probably had manufacturing issues with the TU104 be it low yields and/or high cost making it difficult to create enough and/or meet that price point.
