If ever you need a case study for why the community back in the day wasn’t super awesome and nice…remember Tseric.
Absolute beta male.
Does nobody realize that means 2nd in command? Like vice president status. As in you’re the next closest thing to alpha. I mean I know what people mean when they say that but it’s a really stupid way to say it.
People should be saying “omega”.
yeah but if you’re beta, you don’t become alpha if he goes away, just another alpha comes along. Betas can’t achieve alpha status…at least from a “in the wild” perspective, which is how i read it as, but that’s funny from a president stand point. ![]()
In wolf packs, they very much can actually. As a matter of fact it’s not uncommon for a beta wolf to dominate the alpha if the alpha becomes weak or grows too old.
Fair enough, haven’t done my wolf research but it’s always better to be the alpha over the beta…generally speaking ![]()
Caydiem >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Tseric. I feel slightly embarrassed even comparing those two. I’d put Tseric on the level of Fangtooth.
Idk, man. Mo money mo problems. Am I right? Being an alpha is stressful. I’d rather be the beta. You get most of the benefits and much less responsibility.
At the risk of getting in trouble
Yeah but alphas get dem fine pieces of meaty goodnesss, betas get sloppy seconds…you don’t want sloppy seconds do ya? ![]()
But on a serious note, I do agree with ya. I found while I was in the military it was easier for me to be told what to do rather than keep a group of ppl in line and have to force them to do something they didn’t want to. Truly is a skill and mentality to be a leader…i’m more of a professional follower
Take that up with that people gave Alpha/Beta labels to wolf-pack hierarchy instead of using Omega or something further down the chain.
That said, no one on these boards will ever forget Tseric’s meltdown. The poster’s here will not allow it. We must be reminded daily how ‘toxic’ we are.
Is that the person that was sent like 10 pizzas to his house after he revealed his real name?
Umm… They did do that. Wolf pack heirarchy is alpha → beta → delta → omega. It’s based on the Greek alphabet. Alpha is always number one, omega is always the bottom, beta is always 2nd.
People misuse beta.
That was Bashiok.
That research study was debunked, yet people still refer to it as though it applies to both wolves and humans.
Well that’s a whole different thing. I’m referring to the misuse of “beta” to refer to someone who is highly submissive when it in fact means someone who is very dominant. It just makes people look silly.
But yes, humans are much more complicated than that. Hell, even dogs are more complicated than that.
I had to look it up…thank you google. I had no idea those were pack ranks, pretty cool.
Yes, that’s where I find most of my useless knowledge ![]()
The thing is, as Eilethalua just alluded to, it doesn’t work for wolf packs either. Not natural ones, that is. It works for the unnatural, forced environment of a zoo, where wolves who aren’t related to each other are physically unable to get away from each other; in the wild a wolf pack is a family and functions much more harmoniously.
Actually, the whole alpha-beta thing is wrong. The categories were assigned by studies done on captive wolf packs, not packs living in the wild. Wolf packs in the wild are family units, usually a young male (but not always) splits off to form another pack.
Mech, the researcher who came up with alpha and beta labels, later said he and his fellows had been mistaken and wished he’d never come up witht hem.
