Trying to understand new direction of Brewmasters

Was trying to understand the new direction for Brewmaster Monks that it has taken in The War Within. It seems way more spikier than previous expansions. I know its the start but geared at around 620 my health still seems to spike more than my DK friend at tanking. I was curious is this is the new direction and if anyone had insight on to playing monk as a proactive tank instead of reactive. The damage intake isn’t SMOOTH lol.

Not really sure but I don’t like it. Brew feels very linear. More like a DPS with stagger and some defensive cooldowns. Just not as enjoyable as in previous expansions, with loads of dead talents.

I feel like they did a great job with the other tanks. Prot W, druid, DK all feel great with lots of fun talents and customizability (haven’t played VDH or Prot O).

I think it’s time to retire this version and start from the beginning.

This all started in DF believe it or not when they nerfed tanks and nerfed stagger. Then as DF went on, instead of buffing our durability, they kept buffing our self-healing and from DF S2-on we were like Green BDKs. Now in TWW, they nerfed our healing and CB, and added some things from hero talents, so we just feel spikey with less healing now. They’ve really screwed up what was supposed to be a smooth damage intake tank because they’re afraid of it being OP af in raid.

IMO they should add the DF tier set as talents or baseline where fire damage heals you for 50% of damage dealt. Or less like 30%.
It felt great, gave us another way to combat stagger rather than chugging purifying brews.

As well, instead of only relying on dodge, we should get more Parry Chance.

Brew can be quite strong on both M+ and Raid, but we need that little bit of extra oomf to keep us in better line

IMO - its really not - its only spikey when :

  1. People miss kicks (which happen alot cuz there so many now and they keep casting)
  2. People overpull (trying to pull 2 Twilight Overseers in Grim Batol)
  3. Healers not knowing damage profiles so they are always playing ‘catch-up’
  4. You as a tank not knowing when big-hits are coming in so you don’t use any defensives (double anime slashes in Mists for example or Tank Busters from Grim Batol mobs)

I mean we have enough defensives through :

  1. Fort Brew
  2. Dampen Harm
  3. Diffuse Magic (which I dont take cuz im lazy)
  4. Purifying brew x2 with a Celestial Brew every 30’ish seconds for a fat absorb shield

By now you should have good ‘tank’ trinkets - don’t be going with dps trinkets unless you run with a dedicated group

Yes - I will agree Brewmaster IMO is the hardest Tank to get right and to do keys with - it is by far the less forgiving so you have to be on point definately -

Edit:

Plus looking at yur character your running Master of Harmony instead of Shado Pan so right there your missing out on a 10% dmg reduction (Predictive Training)- which is huge … and yur not Vulpera which also gives a 5% dmg reduction so .,. yea 15% dmg reduction … thats really really big …

Getting good trinkets will literally turn the game around

Refracting Aggression Module

Swarmlord’s Authority

Reinforced-Wax Plating (good for magic dmg)

“and yur not Vulpera which also gives a 5% dmg reduction so .,. yea 15% dmg reduction … thats really really big …”
yeah the 10% reduction vs 10% more stagger is a trade off. was playing around with the 60% stagger clear and blackout combo. which felt pretty damn nice while it was paused and made it feel much tankier when I need it. Outside of that interaction it feels pretty squish without cd’s like @Ninetailz. Also shouldn’t have to give up your whole race just to play a single class (Vulpera monk only viable monk is a shame for M+, that first hit from mobs suck).

Well with Blood getting a nice buff in damage, and Mistweaver getting some nice updates, I have a feeling we’re close to next (maybe after feral). At this point, there will be 5 S/A tier tanks, and then us somewhere around C-. They say they look at data and player feedback, so the BM data should be a bright red flag at this point.

Have you noticed - class bug fixes - class nerfs - class changes - brewmaster has had none in quite some time - must mean we are exactly where they want us

Both MoH and Shadow Pan are about equal defensively, they just do it differently.

The race bonus is negligible when comparing races. Vulpera certainly isn’t on top of that list either. If you look at the top 30 monks, there isn’t a single vulpera. Its pretty spread out, with Night Elf, Dwarf, Orc, and Panderan being the most popular.
