Trying to Return to Nobody

I know that title doesn’t do much to grapple on attention but I’m a blogger so bear with me.

Here’s a heaping dose of context to outline one of the better times of my WrA career. Many years ago I bring Kiur to the server after Earthen Ring’s community ultimately dispersed for reasons I’ll never know. I had a hard time finding a community until I found a paramilitary type guild. They bent the lore a bit, and were rather exclusive to a handful of players. They were very organized, and the general idea was that they were THE team/raiders that defeated Arthas all those years ago, though they kept the “who got the killing blow” bit rather vague just to avoid controversy. I even remember the IC conversation and even the leader was like “I don’t even know”.

Anyway that’s just flavor. In their lore, DK’s actually weren’t too common anymore and they took Kiur in as the guild’s dedicated DK. They more or less had a major character of each class to represent the whole gamut of races and relations, albeit with a human emphasis. It was a lot of fun, as Kiur became the go-to girl for anything DK related. I even managed to host some DK-related events that helped further her plot, and even helped cure a runeblade corruption that the Glead character was suffering during one of his own events. It was a lot of fun.

Anyway, they all migrated to FFXIV rather suddenly (at least to me) and over time had their own piles of drama and implosions that I barely even saw. Tried to play FFXIV but… that’s an entirely different topic.

Ever since then I’ve had a lot of trouble finding a proper community for this character that I love so much. Kiur is very walk-up friendly but there’s a bit of an issue…

See, she’s insane. Through actual background and origin reasons, her mind is heavily splintered. She’s easily distracted, speaks very quickly, and is prone to yelling. While this style has led to some great encounters;

That only accounts for half of her interactions. In the other half, she’s almost ignored outright. I suspect that a certain percentage of people outright ignore me and suspect Kiur of being a troll-character, someone who just butt’s in everyone’s encounters and conversations and ultimately revealed a darker undercurrent to everyone’s “walk up’s welcome!” tag on RP profiles. As if there was an asterisk attached - “…Unless I’m already talking to someone, then beat it!”

Over time I found it very difficult to play the game for more than a month or two at a time. Guilds can’t seem to figure out what to do with the character. I’ve joined zerg guilds where I’ve just been lost to the noise, I once joined an adventurer’s guild led by admittedly wonderful people - but plotlines were nonexistent and consisted mostly of just gathering at uncommon locations and just had dinner together. A nice idea but I require more substance.

I’m mostly looking for a small to medium sized guild, 10-15 “Core” people that leaves enough room for plot progression. I’m not looking to be in the spotlight beyond my own personal events that I can sometimes host. I’m not looking to be a leader or officer, I’m just looking to be relevant again.

I’ve been on and off for the past couple of years. My last sub I only played for three days during BfA’s initial release, and I couldn’t even be bothered to get to the new cap. I didn’t know anyone, I couldn’t find any RP communities to group with. All I had was a couple of chat channels to muse about general goings-ons with RP and lore. I guess that just wasn’t enough for me.

Obviously this lends to very fleeting relationships. Everyone I ever add on Bnet basically ceases to speak to me. I am incredibly active on the internet in general. Discord loads with my computer, I have it on my phone, and on any given day I might have both Blizzard launcher and Steam both open… Depending on what I’m doing.

I’m wondering if there’s some insight this forum could offer me. I don’t mind adjusting to change my approach, but I am hesitant to resubscribe only to run into the same problems I have before. Kiur being met with confusion and silence, and I am left standing in the middle of Stormwind for five hours while I watch Youtube on my second monitor.

When playing characters that have a risk of being mistaken for trolling, you should probably open up some OOC communication with the other players, explaining why she acts as she does.

Just send them a private message, or say something in ((OOC chat)), jsut to reassure them that even though your character is a disruptive element you are not trying to be disruptive to their RP. Then maybe all players involved can work out a way for your character to be IN character without causing the RP that is already underway to be completely derailed to center around Kiur’s unique personality!

in any case I hope you find more pleasant walkup RP as well as a guild to share a storyline with!

I remember the times you mentioned, of being the ones that beat Arthas and all that. Was always a fun thing, back when server canon wasn’t too hyper criticized. Was good for the time, but definitely can annoy people nowadays. Enjoyed it while we could at least

Nice to see some of the ol’ Guard still around.

Kiur still follows some lorebendy elements. We had an entire plotline where Kiur essentially found a Frostmourne shard and forged it into her sword. Almost killed her, and there was a lot of IC drama that she may have become too powerful. Lot of IC debate, it was crazy-fun.
Then Legion came out and then shards o’ frostmourne became canon. I’m not sure whether to feel vindicated or bummed out that a good part of Kiur’s plot became moot. That, and it was widely accepted that “nobody is walking around with the REAL artifacts…” and I’m here like… b-b-but Kiur did the thing :frowning:

On the same vein, remember how people said the best way to RP a dragon was to be ultra subtle about it, or just RP like they’re not even one at all? I was doing that, except with the void. Well, my Kul Tiran girl has essentially been a void-human for years and then Void Elves came out and made half her plot pointless. At least I wrote some short stories about it.

I had a group that made it canon with our 25 people that we killed illidan, and my dk took his wing as a trophy and dragged it around smc.

Nice! I still roleplay Kiur being super secretive about her runeblade. It’s always covered in cloth.

I remember a time when I used to keep human skulls and night elf ears as hood ornaments right next to my Sulfuron Alter.

Ahh, those were the good ol’ dark days under the Mountain…

Now it’s all about the Alliance and stuff, right?!

Right.

For the Alliance!

all that means is we need to be especially picky about WHICH humans and elves we kill and use as ornamentation!

…I still think we had every reason to kill illidan and take his stuff, no matter what some naaru says to me. Sineros up there has the right idea (despite somehow being a good guy death knight during burning crusade)

My DH claims the glaives >:D

interesting! why did your DH want to kill Illidan? Did they defect from the Illidari?

No I just roleplay her as being a bit of a thief. She’s imp-infused so she’s a maniacal little lunatic. Very fun to RP in general.

I really enjoy meeting openly weird characters. I’m about as rudderless as you describe right now, but an endorsement’s good, right?

Good way to word it. I have resubbed and Stormwind is super empty. I imagine it’s mid-workday and I’m just off work. Guess I’ll try to experience BfA, but I like RP more than the game itself these days.

Hey Kiur, I am 100% in a similar boat. I’ve been playing on WrA since early Cata (with a few hiatuses here and there), but I like to switch characters a lot and have never really put down roots, so to speak.

So I don’t have much advice to offer, other than to say you’re not alone. I have met some cool people in the WrA Discord, too, though I haven’t got around to actually RPing or joining a guild.

I read through this but I’m still not totally sure what is being asked here? So forgive me if I misunderstand.

RP is like dating and making friends, it really is basically just making friends but make believe friends so there’s often two levels of friendship that you have to navigate. The IC friendship and then OOC friendship.

Walk up RP is a lot like a one night stand, you’re also gonna meet a lot of people and most of them aren’t going to stick around. They have their own pressing things to do maybe they’re in a guild and have guild things to do or something else comes along they like more that takes up their time. Some folks still like to do game things like raid or PVP and RP is something they do in their down time. So you really never know if the person you’re RPing with will stick around long term.

Otherwise, if you are a regular and make yourself seen constantly in the typical RP hubs, you’ll eventually make connections if you are a pleasant individual. Some days might be more quiet than others and you gotta put in the effort to engage people but in the end a lot of the above takes time.

The only other advice is community events are always great if you are unguilded or don’t have any connections. It’s what I did for the most part on Moon Guard and made a few friends here and there. WRA has plenty of events so making your way to them is always a good way to meet people.

Not sure if I was so much asking a direct question and more like a really long “I’m lonely - Help”. I just like to write so it came across as very bloggy.

My problem is, as Adelbrand said, is I haven’t put down any roots. I find it difficult to do so. I’ve added people and put relevant notes (things like “met in stormwind” or “DK expert”) to help remember who they are but after a certain point, nobody talks to me anymore and without consistent contact… I forget who they are. I’m sure the same thing happens from them, to me.
