I have been a Hunter main since beginning of Legion. Use to love all the specs. But lately, BM and MM have been meh to me. I have always enjoyed Survival spec but I have never raided with it because I was told no.
Should I try to find a guild that will accept a Survival Hunter for Raiding Normal and Heroic? Or should I swap to a different class now?
Who is telling you no for raiding with SV?
I could see for mythic progression perhaps but for Normal and heroic i can’t see it being an issue.
This says more about pugging that it does for SV and other non fotm specs.
Here is a pro tip from me to you
Make sure you’re good at survival
Then lie and tell the raid leader what ever they want to hear
Then do good dps and no one will question you again
Survival specs is a melee specs. Your competition to groups are melee Classes. As of right now, Survival is among the least popular melee specs. Compared to DH, DK, Warrior, Rogue and even Ret Paly’s, you would be the last to be chosen.
But on low level gameplay, any specs are okay. Heroic Raiding is considered a low level gameplay according to some. Even M+15 are considered low level gameplay too. It means you would be welcomed on such groups.
But to some noobs, Heroic Raiding like Heroic Nzoth and M+15 are considered high level of play. You would have a hard time to be invited to their groups.
On Mythic +, the party leader forming the group is usually looking at group compositions. Sometimes, they want 2 melees and 1 Range, all melees or all range depending on the Dungeon’s weekly affix. Ensure you tell the party leader that you are a melee.
On Raids, you should be fine if you are just doing up to Heroic. But if the raid group wipes a lot, make sure you are among the top DPS or else you would be kicked. Survival is capable of doing decent DPS.
Maintaining 2 Hunter specs with Survival as one of the specs would be hard. Switching between Survival and BM or MM back and forth would be hard as you would need a decent high ilevel melee weapon when on Survival and a decent range weapon when on BM or MM. My main hunter is a BM. I cant switch to Survival even if I want to becoz I have no decent melee weapon. So I decided to switch my alt Hunter into Survival to test Survival. But that alt cant play as Range becoz now, she has no decent Range Weapon. The new pre-patch event, my alt got rewarded with decent Melee weapon. Fine. How would I get a decent Range weapon for her? It’s gonna be hard.
Only 5 specs in the game can use agility staves and polearms, and 2 of those are tanks, so getting an SV weapon isn’t actually a tough as it seems. That’s even more the case in SL now that weapon drops from raids are on a token system rather than direct drops. I have an SV weapon identical in level to my bow, despite having basically zero intention of playing SV while it remains melee, simply because it dropped and no one else wanted it.
So many people keep saying the same things over and over.
You need to duel all the melee classes in order to fight for a raid spot!!! Ya maybe if you are in a mythic raiding guild.
I have pretty much mained survival hunter for all of BFA. Raid with friends here and there. BUT, also did a lot of pugs do to work schedule , with full clears of the raids as surv.
The problem is, is people see what mythic raiders are doing and try and follow. The reality is most people playing are raiding normal / heroic and pushing 10-15 keys which survival can hold its own.
only try hards care about raiding normal and heroic with “optimal” specs.
tbh if the raid cant down heroic and normal bosses off “meta” then they are pretty bad.
i did normals with my survival and some heroic on him as well. always in the top 5 dps and we did well clearing the bosses.
Just find a guild, pug groups are full of try-hard mediocre players (not always). a friendly guild is more then likely not going to care what u play in normal or heroic as long as you do ur dps rotation right and pay attention to mechanics.

Generally heroics are not to hard to beat because you have people going try hard
I mean if the pug leader is a try hard looking for top meta specs than yeah, getting a group is going to be difficult.
It makes no difference whether it’s viable or not, the pug community is super toxic in general.
