Main difference between American armed services and American police is the armed servicemembers are trained not to indiscriminately kill people. Depending on their branch and deployment history they may even be trained in conflict de-escalation, investigation, or even…police work.
The police generally conduct themselves a lot more like an occupying army, and that fact alone explains a lot about the US.
ETA: Also, the military both need and know how to use the military hardware that tends to get surplussed out to US police departments, which is why you see those tragically hilarious pictures of fat cops in poorly-fitting body armor, driving tanks on city streets and brandishing battle rifles like they’re foam fingers at a basketball game.

That… actually sums up how I see it when police sirens go towards gang violence in my area. They aren’t making me feel safer, it’s just three armed groups looking to kill each other instead of two.
I feel safer hoping stray bullets don’t come through the window over calling the cops to deal with it, because if I describe it wrong, my neighbors who didn’t do anything could be getting shot, or I could, and all I did was add to the death toll.
