Trouble in PVP as Arcane

Any advice for PVP as an arcane mage? I do great damage when I am not being focused, but when the enemy just sits on me I can’t do a single thing.

I especially have trouble against SP, war, DH, DK.

My alter Time keeps getting dispelled and ice block can only be used so many times.

I hate playing arcane and never have until literally yesterday. That being said I have higher CR than with frost or fire.

When I get trained on, obviously try to peel with FN, COC, and BW. I throw slow onto them when I can and try to LOS and get a Ring down. To try to get some damage out I use Ice flows and cast arcane blast and barrage and missiles when CC procs. Have to sort of run sideways to run and cast on them…

its not fun… at all… Aside from mage being weak overall, its just not a lot of fun right now.

Disclaimer : 100-0 ing people from invis is absolutely hilarious… So you could call it fun. but outside of that, the spec is boring and IMHO broken.

She will answer your questions once she’s back from Dalaran.

Spriest is winnable, but you need to be very reactive. Spellsteals are important and kiting is too. (what, kiting a priest?) yes. Don’t let them use fear on you, kite them and keep em slowed. Being dispelled is just the name of the game; ignore dispells act like they dont exist and anytime they’re dispelling you should be hardcasting. You should also hardcast during heals, and don’t drop your abar either, keep ab’s going if you can, only use abar if they’re silenced and you think it might score a kill. Every pw:s should be yours instantly.

War is weird now in df, idk why. My tactic is to string alter/blink together on the very first charge, then alter-back after 2nd charge, and blink out the 3rd. You have a 4th blink if you spec displace. If you don’t do the alter at the start, you’re getting caught. Ice nova, coc, firebreath and blastwave will all help you here, but do not miss any of them and be calm the whole fight. You don’t need to poly a war, but you want to fake a poly to get reflect out the way early, first chance you get. Slipstream is vital; if you don’t have slipstream, use what you’re good at to keep dmg going.

DH is a kite battle just like war, but roots are going to be massively more impactful. You actually DO want to get sheeps off against a dh, but you need to only go for it, when you know for certain it’ll land, so be patient and wait for your sheep window. You also want to do at least 2 sheeps, let your cd’s fulfill again as much as possible, and then even tho you may not like it, you’ll have to string something like icenova or frostnova into your burst rotation, becuase they’re just too quick. Mirror images are magical in kiting a DH, however the timing is important because if they’re bursting, they’re going to hit you 3 times and kill your images nomatter how far away you are, so wait until you notice their dps significantly drop, then use images.

DK, you’re dead. There’s no hope for you. There are other arcane mages on these forums who are master elites; and hopefully they know how to beat a dk. Me? I’m not that good. I do however notice that despite their snare resistance, roots are very effective. I have freezingcold root, icenova, frostnova and combined with the alter combo (above, with wars) and displacement, I can avoid dk’s ONCE IN A WHILE. I had a really powerful arcane mage friend who would lure out their silence and then just stand still like a target dummy and hardcast em and he would win, but he was a league beyond me, idk.

Dragon Breath > Ring of Frost > Knockback … causing everyone to be frozen, and thrown far away from him.

Was also used against me while I was on my Bear defending a base in EotS (rated).

Doesn’t help against war, DH, and DK. They have a charge/dash/grip/root for every one of those, else a stun.

If it’s 1 on 1 it’s fine no matter who’s the opponent.
My biggest issue now is being targeted by the 2 dps in solo shuffle.

Alter Time should not be dispellable though, it doesnt make sense.

That’s where I had the most trouble was in solo shuffle. Every game was just sit on the mage.

I did the same strat on my other toon, was flawless. The mage couldn’t do a thing.

Yeah got to find a solution …

  1. The DPS will sit on mage the whole 6 rounds - Your capacity to survive while still doing some DPS will determine the outcome
  • In that case, good luck, once all your cooldowns are on CD its game over unless the healer is a beast
  1. The DPS totally ignore mage (maybe because they dont want to play hide and seek)
  • In that case you better land these Surge POM AB Fat Barrage to close the game

I noticed, my DPS is always the highest by a large margin but often not at the top of total damage.

That’s because :

  • Huge usage of CC (Poly + RoF)
  • Running around kiting/dodging melee
