Alternatively, you could just get ~2000 gold. Sometimes they have rare items in them, I think the Necrolord Epic chest can have a mount in it?
With all due respect, it should have an epic item (gear) the only RNG should be what slot it is for.
It’s WoW. The devs are really good with making a neat package and getting you all excited then you open it and it’s just a turd in the box and them smirking at you gesturing for you to fork over some money for the next one.
I mean I can agree with a gear reward being there as well. I think BFA sometimes gave gear in its Emissary chests, and would probably be on par with heroic dungeon loot.
BFA would give gear that was around your Ilvl…

There was no turd in the box. I guess the goal is to see how long you can waste someone’s time before they just say eff this, and find something that actually rewards you.
Callings did in fact give gear, at least in 9.0, including the epic callings giving 203 gear which was the best you were gonna get without group content. The new world content quests give gear too, the weekly, the assaults and dailies can all give gear as rewards.
I think it’s just rng. i got one like that today too. easy gold+catch up renown and mount chance.
I just see callings as paragon cache farming that gives 2k gold >.< That way , im never disappointed ! 
Yay an epic you will vendor for 50g vs over 2000g of flavor items… c’mon.
Don’t waste my time with some random gear I’m not going to use. Give me mounts, pets, toys, gold. Oh, they do.
