At least in wPvP where I keep on getting feared even though I am STANDING ON THE TOTEM!
What is going on with this useless totem? I put it down, gear feared and NOTHING. It is so frustrating. IT IS A 20 YEAR OLD GAME. FIX IT
It works, just not how you think it does apparently. It doesn’t prevent fear, it dispels fear every 5 seconds. So you will be feared for a few seconds before it gets dispelled. Provided you don’t run out of its range while feared.

So dropping it before fear is cast (or guess with a Priest) isnt the right move because the first dispell hits right when you drop? Feels like the totem is completely useless unless you are lucky to be in range

It pulses every 5 seconds.

It isn’t useless, at all, it’s just not fear ward.
Correct, you really should drop it slightly before scream to time the pulse just after scream is executed for maximum effect; EI maybe 2.5 sec beforehand. (when you see them running up on you)
You can vs locks drop grounder riiiiiight at the cusp of the fear cast complete to immune the fear, but will not work vs AE howl or warrior fear. For that its tremmor and with practice on your shaman you will get better with it. You can if pressed by several targets also tie into tremor and grounding the use of resto pot (look it up) is extremely effective vs many sources of CC and debuffs.
With priest their fear is easy to know coming, you can kite them across eart bind and or frost shock and avoid the fear. You can then purge PWS and lighting / Sock to pressure a retreat.
Later on with gear & Ele fury talent + BWL Class trinket be capable of 2 shorting most classes easily; easiest burst in game. You are however dependent 100% on consumables use in PvP like warrior, so just accept that or dont cry about rogues, locks, Sp’s and Mages that will dunk on you hard if you fail to use consumables and Eng.
It’s not the greatest anti fear for self unless you have improved totem range from resto, no.
It’s better to insta drop when your party gets feared than it is for you to prevent fear on yourself. Use grounding totem for fear cast or shock. Or range an aoe fear.
You’ll notice it works better once you have the resto talent
